"SNIP..........
Trouble could be brewing for Republicans in deep red Alabama as the first poll after the Republican Senate primary runoff finds Democratic candidate Doug Jones trailing Republican Roy Moore 50.2%-44.5%.
The poll was conducted for Decision Desk HQ by Opinion Savvy, and revealed, Moore boasts a huge lead among evangelical voters, 67.8% to 28%, while Jones boasts an even larger lead among non-evangelicals, 69.7% to 26.7%. Among African-American voters, Moore peels off 24.8% to Jones 70.9%, while among white voters, Jones has a surprising 36.1% to Moores 58.5%.
What this means is that Moore is a weaker general election in Alabama than Luther Strange would have been. It is only one poll, but it does hint that the door could be open for Democrats to run a competitive race in the state.
As in other special elections in deep red states, dumping millions of dollars into the state to help the Democratic candidate wont be enough to win. Republicans have a deep partisan advantage in Alabama, but there is one potentially powerful that Jones could make. The Democrats could flip this seat by making this election all about Roy Moore and how he would embarrass his home state if he won.

(3,816 posts)I think most GOP voters will hem and haw, then hold their nose and vote for Moore.

And he will have campaigning for him none other than Donald 'some white supremacists are good people' Trump
There is no way Moore gets 25% of the AA vote, he'll be lucky to get anything over 5 or maybe 8% on his best day.

(7,436 posts)Church is a HUGE part of Southern culture. It's disheartening to listen to African-Americans here talk about racial prejudice and then turn around and extend that same prejudice toward the LGBT community. And those same folks will go on and on about their churches.
They are also highly susceptible to party machine politics yet will stay home unless specifically motivated to turn out on election day. I've seen this my whole life and it's incredibly frustrating, much like the Southern condemnation of labor unions with little desire to understand their role more clearly.

Sorry, but this guy doesn't have a chance of winning over the people of Alabama.

And please take a look at his issues, he is not some fake conservaDem blue dog type. He is the son of a steel worker and is not afraid to stand up for core Democratic principles

(7,596 posts)Sorry, but I've seen too many polls for elections in red states where it looks like the Dem candidate has a shot and then ends up suffering a crushing defeat anyway.

(15,512 posts)"making this election all about Roy Moore" would basically mean running campaign ads for him. They'd do better to spend the money on getting voters' registration, ID and transportation ready for election day. Negative ads depress turnout on both sides and if Alabamans were in a mood to be ashamed of Moore he would't be headed to the Senate chambers.
