How much damage do you think has been, and is going to be done before this whole Twilight Zone shit show is over? I suppose that's a question that can't really be answered given just how unpredictable and insane the status quo is right now.
I'm just curious what some people's opinions are on the amount of time it's going to take for America to recover. I can't help but feel its image is rather irreparably damaged on the world stage. Many countries are already looking to bypass the US where they can politically and even economically. The US is still the largest economy in the world but Trump has only hastened its decline as countries like China rise to fill the increasing void in global leadership. Most countries see the writing on the wall when it comes to global warming for example and have started to finally invest in renewables. China is making very large investments in solar and more.
I think the US can catch up if it wants to. But doing so will definitely require an about face in terms of policy and how it invests in its future and not just its top 1% which honestly mostly simply goes off shore. Do you feel that the next government will be able to steer the ship in the right direction? Just how much damage do you feel has been done. Too much to recover potentially? Will it take a generation or more? Not that I feel we have that much time to play with. Or is that too pessimistic.

(1,823 posts)in my mind, the real damage trump will do is giving a voice to all the RW talking heads and far right bloggers. They have been saying for yrs the media is biased and he's 1 upped it to straight up lying and making stuff up. half the country will say the media just makes up everything, the republican party will lurch even further to the right over the next 4 yrs and the country will be divided along party lines like never before. Had someone wanted to destroy this country from the inside out they couldnt have dreamed of someone as good as trump to do it.

(100,151 posts)And we won't see it for several decades. This is just the beginning - the tiki torch rallies, the hate and racism, the Hitler worship and Pepe The Frog, it's only going to get worse. So much worse. I really hate to sound like an old guy, I'm not. I'm 37. But when I was growing up my generation was taught openness and inclusion. You know what? It worked! The generation now? They're being taught fear, isolation, and hatred. And they have access to the internet, where they will only spread fear, isolation and hatred. The parents - my generation - certainly are doing nothing to help. They're either helicopter parents who spend way too much time babysitting their kids, or they feed them this fear, hatred and isolation by watching the fear and misinformation on Fox News 24/7, and going to megachurches where they're being taught hate. They also encourage private school and even one on one school where the isolation becomes even worse, and it will make kids not be able to handle team environments where there might be diverse cultures, genders, and opinions. The thing is if we don't reverse this trend now, things are only going to get worse. This generation is old enough to vote now. When they're old enough to run for office, that's when the shit will hit the fan. Think of Roy Moore, but a million times worse, and more of them.

(100,151 posts)When the young generation is a bunch of Hitler loving Nazis and holds rallies where they carry tiki torches and beat the shit out of minorities, it doesn't bode well for things to come. I want to believe that this is just a fad, I really do.

(22,976 posts)That movie always struck me with its grim depiction of a future that, with a breakdown of civilization, could actually happen. It also envisions the mega-wealthy avoiding much of the suffering of the masses. Trump & Co. could make it all finally happen.
