And aren't we "a nation of immigrants" to begin with? I have grandparents and great-grandparents that "came over on the last boat" as my mother used to say... Very few of us would be here without "immigrants."

Jews were said to be too stupid to make it in America, KKK hated the Papists about as much as blacks, No Irish allowed, on and on this moronic bigotry against new comers.

Yet the immigrants are vital to us. A huge share of our great job creator firms were founded by immigrants, our science journals are flooded with foreign-sounding names from our University labs. Without these immigrants we will sink like a stone yet our people typically hate them.

Clearly evolution has many challenges yet to conquer.

But eventually they become part of the mainstream. And I agree that we'd be nowhere without the important contributions of immigrants - and without them, very few of us would be here.
