President Trump must have noticed that Michael Flynn, his short-lived national security adviser, was not mentioned in this weeks indictments by special counsel Robert Mueller.
It was an odd omission since Flynn faces potential legal jeopardy for both false statements and foreign lobbying without properly registering to do so. Flynns son is tied up in the Russia investigation as well and could also potentially face charges. Yet no one has heard from Flynn in months.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) speculated over the summer that Flynn had already flipped:
All the signals are suggesting he is already cooperating with the FBI, and may have been for some time. First of all, they had him dead to rights on a felony false statement, on the statement they took from him at the White House on the Kislyak conversations. Second, Comey reported that one of the things the FBI does with cooperators is get them to go back and clean up areas of non-compliance. Flynn, who will never be hired by a foreign government again, went back and cleaned up his foreign agent filings. Third, all of the reporting of the Eastern District of VA on subpoenas is one hop away from Flynn. He is the hole in a donut of subpoenas.
One of the most talkative people in Trumpland, Flynn has gone absolutely silent. That is exactly what a prosecutor would strongly encourage a cooperating witness to do in order to avoid lengthy imprisonment.
Trump has consistently defended Flynn as a good man, even to the point of asking former FBI Director James Comey to go easy on him.
We still dont know for sure if Flynn is cooperating with Mueller. But with Flynn staying out of the headlines this week, Trump probably thinks he is.

(16,955 posts)Between that and his son's possible problems, it all makes sense.

(3,867 posts)"Lock him up" he'll just get less time for cooperating

(16,955 posts)There is the "cheerleader" thing from the convention.
Funny how you can stand there and encourage that while you're involved in the process of getting yourself a "government-supported vacation in an institution of their choice!"

(58,793 posts)He is, if anything, more exposed than Manafort, especially WRT the FARA violations. It would not surprise me at all if Flynn has be "Papadopped" into testifying.
There is no honor among thieves, and this might be the biggest den of thieves ever to climb so high in the national consciousness.

(25,183 posts)Mueller knows that Trump is far less likely to pardon Manafort than anyone else mentioned so far in the investigation who was part of the Trump inner circle. Maybe he wants Flynn to see that Trump will let his subordinates twist in the wind once their usefulness is gone.
It has to be a bit scary for Flynn to watch things unfold with Manafort, knowing that he's probably next in line for the same treatment. It could make him flip in a more scathing way if he identifies Manafort's fate as being eventually his own.

(32,917 posts)...I think it was in June but I could be wrong. Flynn was already fired, Mueller was already starting up his investigation. Flynn supposedly went to Mueller (or the FBI) and offered to snitch for a deal. The FBI said "No thanks" which was very surprising.
Either Flynn really did get a deal and he's been cooperating since last summer. Or he's laying very low and waiting for an indictment any day now. But the story at the time was the FBI didn't need Flynn's testimony, they already had enough to convict just about everybody (including Trump) and if they made a deal with Flynn, he'd get a walk. They didn't want to give him a walk, they wanted the guy in jail.
I'm guessing what we didn't know at the time was the Feds already had Papadopoulus, and his testimony was even better. Let's see how this all plays out. I think Flynn would give up everybody if he thought it would help him. The guy has already committed treason, so what's he got to lose?

(32,917 posts)So where's Flynn now? Did Cheeto stop talking to him and freeze him out?
Maybe he thought Flynn was wearing a wire, like George Papadopoulos eventually did.
Is Flynn still in the USA or did he split for Turkey?
We have so many questions.
