Deborah Gonzales won House District 117 with 53 percent of the vote and Jonathan Wallace won House District 119 with 56 percent of the vote. Both seats are in the Athens area and both were vacant, hence the special elections. But not only were the two seats previously held by Republican incumbents, they were uncontested in the 2016 elections.

GOTV and Democrats win big!

(21,597 posts)This is the only time I've been happy to read the news since last November.
The Athens, GA state and federal congressional districts were sliced and diced up by the State GOP over recent decades in order to gerrymander and take away the voting power of our progressive and Democratic Southern college town.
Take that GA GOP! Democrats kicked your sorry asses.
Brian Kemp (R), current GA SoS & candidate for Governor is from Athens. He's currently busy wiping hard drives to conceal Russian election interference and GA GOP collusion to steal elections. I hope he's having a terrible day.
Edit: add link to DU post about how the GA GOP and GA SoS are attempting to conceal collusion to steal elections.

http://onlineathens.com/oconee/local-news/2017-11-07/dems-appear-win-seats-house-special-electionsHey y'all! Vote in the goddamn 2018 midterm elections!
Edit: Both former Republican state Reps voted AGAINST the guns on college campuses law which was recently passed, thus allowing anyone to openly carry weapons in places like the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, among other places on the UGA campus.
The GOP candidates who will run in the midterm election will not be inclined to vote in Athens' best interest. They will have the full support of the super right wing GOP rural and suburban Oconee County voters outside of Athens-Clarke County.
