People of color won for Democratic candidates last night. We need to remember that

This is from a Facebook post in an Indivisible group:

“I feel I need to say something, after “moderating” on a different FB page a difficult conversation over the weekend that went into the topic of racism and privilege within Indivisible groups. During this conversation, I mostly tried to keep my opinions to myself. I figured, this was my job as a moderator, to do what I could to keep the conversation moving forward, and to intervene only as an absolute last resort.

Tonight, progressives are celebrating an overwhelming off-year electoral victory, highlighted by the win of Ralph Northam over Ed Gillespie for the position of Governor of Virginia. There are dozens and dozens of similar victories to celebrate tonight. But I want to focus us on one salient fact. Tonight was a victory for voters who are people of color, who were able to vote in sufficient numbers to blunt the force of the white vote.

White men voted for Gillespie over Northam by 63% to 36%. White women voted for Gillespie by 51% to 48%. Please keep in mind, Gillespie ran as filthy and racist a campaign as Virginia has seen in many years, and whites supported him, 57% to 42%.

There is nothing new in these numbers. This is the single most important driving factor in today’s American politics, that our politics rely on people of color to prevent the white electorate from electing racist moral monsters intent on savaging every value and principle I hold dear. This would have been obvious to us had Northam lost, and other Democrats lost, and we’d have heard the cable news pundits talk about how Trumpism (which I know to be just plain racism) had once again won the day. Instead, I heard about how the voters in Virginia and elsewhere rejected Trumpism. No, they didn’t. Voters of color rejected Trumpism, as they always have. White voters did not reject Trumpism.

There’s more to say. A lot more, I think. I don’t like the sense of triumph I’m hearing expressed from my white liberal friends, a sense that I think should be replaced with gratitude (or something close to gratitude) for our neighbors who are people of color, who are the ones who won this election night over the opposition of white voters. I think a better white response is one of deep introspection and determination to address the racism that is so obvious in our politics, even on a night like this. “

To dismiss the issues facing people of color as mere "identity politics" is not only immoral, it's political suicide.

Phil Murphy won those with incomes up to $50K and Unions - and then Black women/men and Latino Women/men.

Key here - he listened 18 months ago - and 12 months ago created a platform of inclusion and compromise.

Yes - black women - we SHOW UP for others. We do. We simply do.

And that means - we need to show up for others. I think at least in my district - we are going to have to start really POUNDING the VFW halls - we did in our borough and flipped two seats. VFW halls, meet and greets at the pool hall, fundraising for the FD, etc. etc. I positive our two seats in our borough are because of that.

the fact the candidate is not perfect...saw Crystal Ball yesterday...she was excited for Virginia...and had worked the grassroots did an amazing job. She is a Sanders and Perriello supporter, but like indivisible and other groups worked her heart out for the Democratic candidates that were running. Also, I hope Perriello will run for a house seat again...he worked his heart out for Northam...very impressed.

Turnout surge included black voters, as well. In majority black precincts, turnout is running 7% of our pre-election estimates, v. 8% elsewhere.

Turnout in precincts where Hispanic *or* Asian voters represent at least 20% of the population is 15 percent higher than our pre-election estimates.

We emerge stronger than ever & the cheaters in the WH & Congress who sold out America, OUR America, will all be stripped of their ill gotten treasures & be destroyed.

The united power of people in action remains, & still standing strong today.

They pushed and America shoved.

I am so proud today.

about running a woman and/or POC on the Pres ticket in 2020. I should add, and someone under the age of 45.

It's not tokenism, or choosing someone based only on a demographic. It's about inclusion and representation. And the implication that somehow this is overlooking the best candidates is, frankly, offensive.

POC tend to be more progressive in their leadership than white Dems. I'm too lazy to look it up, but there have even been studies that have shown this. The Black Caucus, for example, is very progressive.

People should remember that when they get into these "economics vs. social justice" arguments.

Walker and his legislators have done everything in their powers to suppress the votes of blacks and other minorities in Wisconsin.

IMO the data shows the national republican party that they are losing the battle of the numbers. As more brown skin folks become citizens and get the right to vote in national elections the republicans will lose power. The TRUMP wall is for this very purpose.

IMO if the SCOTUS reverses the national trend to gerrymander strictly to the advantage of the GOP this trend will end and change after the 2020 census.

popular black candidates had been able to consistently get about 25% of the white vote to get elected mayors in predominately urban areas.

In the past 2 decades, that number slowly increased to 30%, and more recently, we finally reached upwards of 40%, with Deval Patrick as Gov. of MA & eventually Barack Obama as Senator & then President, i.e., enough to win state-wide and national elections.

So at this point, 40% of the white vote is now the "new ceiling" for Democrats and/or candidates of color. And because of the demographic changes and increased POC voting, this has allowed more and more to POC to get elected via a plurality of demographics.

Elections are too complicated for that.

In a campaign season that saw even a shift in white males, though, we can fairly say that the majority of people of color continue to be right about the direction we all need to be pursuing.

Similarly, we can say that, sure, Trump sucks rocks, but also that VA Republicans tried too hard to run as mini-Trumps, fighting the last election instead of reading the voters.
