Politician who joked about women's march defeated - Ashley Bennet Got Angry & ran against him & won!

NOVEMBER 08, 2017 6:55 AM

MAYS LANDING, N.J.

A New Jersey politician who shared a meme on Facebook during January's Women's March in Washington asking whether the protest would be "over in time for them to cook dinner" is eating his words.

A woman who was angered by Republican John Carman's remarks on Tuesday defeated his bid for a second term as an Atlantic County freeholder.

Democrat Ashley Bennett is a first-time candidate. The 32-year-old Egg Harbor Township resident works as a psychiatric emergency screener in the crisis department at Cape Regional Hospital.

Carman said the meme was "a bad choice" but said the women in his life were "strong and confident" enough to not be offended by his joke. He apologized a few days later.

It was hopefully a wakeup call for many on our side. It's good to set them straight at the ballot box. Our side was really energized this time.

If we can just wake up some more sleepy Dems in S. Jersey, then they can elect a Democrat in that Congressional District too!

And we all heard them back in January, February and March: "Oh sure, all these demonstrations look impressive, but how can ordinary people possibly think that they're going to change anything? It's just a one-day thing. Nothing will get accomplished by shouting, waving signs, and wearing those dumb hats."

Boom, baby.

We've pretty much had it. From cooking dinner to control of our reproductive rights to lower wages . . . IT'S OVER. Thank you Ashley Bennett.

where the transgender beat the "chief homophobe" were my two favorite stories from Tuesday night - and that's from a night where there were many inspiring stories of how people who never considered running for office said it was time for them to do so. I don't think we should ever underplay what happened on Tuesday night. There was not one race the republicans can take comfort in - they didn't flip one office. I would expect to see several (perhaps many) repubs in purple districts to announce their retirements soon.
