Democrats won the Crown Jewel of republican cronyism... The Town of Hempstead!

This is a big deal by itself. The Town of Hempstead (Long Island) is the crown jewel of republican cronyism and possibly the strongest symbol of republican decline in the country. Town of Hempstead has ALWAYS been controlled by corrupt crony republicanism. It's all about patronage. Town workers were often seen committing political acts while on the job. Many Long Islanders became republicans ONLY so they could get a Town job.

Democrats won the supervisors seat. Republicans still control the council for now. But winning that supervisors seat is a big deal symbolically. Democrats also won the Nassau County Executive position. This was another pillar of republican cronyism, but Democrats held it 8 years ago.

Meanwhile, Laura Gillan became the first Democrat ever elected as Hempstead town supervisor. Gillen won an unexpected victory over Republican incumbent Anthony Santino in the race.

Gillen said, "We exposed the nepotism, the cronyism, the financial management in the town and the need for a bipartisan, cordial, new town board that will deliver results for the residents of the Town of Hempstead."

Republicans have controlled Hempstead for about 100 years, according to political experts.

Republicans were plagued by corruption scandals and political in-fighting. http://longisland.news12.com/story/36792282/gillen-curran-make-history-with-big-wins-in-nassau-county

The repugs political machine was in absolute power then. Glad to see the cronyism and nepotism and been deposed.

Republican. The fear of property taxes going up kept republicans in power, not that it stopped the increase in taxes. It is just an illusion.

They can't fight this alone, Sniderman will be a big help in helping them unmask corruption and sent perps to jail.

And D'Amato was one of the epitomes of assholery before this latest crowd of loon teabaggers came in. The south had Strom Thurmond & Jesse Helms and the north had D'Amato.

Going to Hempstead for the day meant we were going to have a picnic in the woods, have a little campfire and go mushroom picking for the wild mushrooms. Great memories and completely random to your thread. But Hempstead now brings all good thoughts for me today!

Rec'd.

The Republicans are very organized and when my mom was alive they utilized senior citizens to help big time!
But Trump lost to Clinton 57 to 43 last year there.
