Gerrymandering of several kinds is the only thing keeping the GOP in power now

Gerrymandering of several kinds is the only thing keeping the GOP in power now
By Tom Toles November 8 at 10:00 AM

The self-correction mechanism of American democracy came out in force Tuesday in repudiating the dark, twisted path President Trump has us traveling down.

But it is an uphill fight against something that never should have happened in the first place. Our democracy isn’t and can’t be a perfect one, and flaws and distortions have been built into our system of government from the beginning. It has always been hoped that these distortions would tend to cancel each other out over time, and they still may.

But in 2016, they acted in concert and we had the blackest of black swan events. It wasn’t entirely accidental.

Let us count the ways.

Huge bluewave democratic election in 2018.

We take back the House...and...the Senate.

The very next day impeachment proceedings start in the democratic House.

It worked to perfection last night!

if it wasn't for gerrymandering. Dems got more votes, they just didn't get enough of those votes to win.

Somebody here at DU pointed out that Gerrymandering works great until it doesn't. It's based on assumptions about margin that totally blow up when they fail.
