Been hearing this, or variations of, all f'n day from MSM. It's really getting to these cretins that the PEOPLE stood up and said NO MAS! Media is so used to manipulating and calling the shots it is a real shocker to them when Americans can make up their own minds about facts on the ground, and act accordingly.

(10,853 posts)Now in all honesty, no one used the word 'cocky.' At least that I heard. But the implication was clear: Don't get too excited; this victory guarantees nothing.
Well, of course, there's no guarantee. But we have a roadmap now and some of the landmarks indicate:
Trump is really unpopular
Dems can win when they Get Out the Vote
We can't wait until the last minute to do the hard work; short cuts get us nowhere
Resourcing is important so we need to prepare in advance and . . .
Everything Trump Touches Dies
Okay, I made the last one up, stole it straight from Rick Wilson once again. Because it's so-o-o good
The cable news channels are committed to throwing shade on this fantastic win. Do. Not. Let. Them.
Last night's result was not a mere fluke. It was the result of a lot of hard work, shoe leather and heart from volunteers and Party loyalists alike. And voters, of course. Kudos to all of them.

(60,536 posts)Hillary Clinton, the other from an official of the GOP. So what? CNN and MSNBC are news stations, they aren't Democratic Party news outlets and they are obligated to present both sides, no matter how much it infuriates us. Personally, I haven't watched CNN since February 8, 2007, the day Anna Nicole Smith died and CNN spent the whole damned day talking about it.
I learned, during the assorted scandals the GOP accused the Clintons of in the 90's, I would know more by reading newspaper articles, editorials, and op-ed columns, then I would from watching either of those stations or, listening to their talking heads. Even now, during the day, I read articles on DU and know more about a topic then what's being presented by the talking heads. The only time that isn't true is when one of the talking heads has "late breaking news." If we're going to rely on talking heads to give us their views under the guise of "news," we're only going to be frustrated and angered.
Give up on talking heads, read the news.

(10,853 posts)I agree. We need to read, read, read. From all sources. And understand the TV/cable news, now populated by talking heads, pundits, whatever, are frequently rendering up more personal opinion than anything else.
My only point is don't let them frame the argument and/or throw shade on a moment that Democrats earned last night.

(1,928 posts)Complacency would be bad.
The state wide races, honestly, was not a surprise. Virginia has gone blue the past 3 Presidential elections, they had a Dem incumbent governor, 2 dem Senators, and haven't had GOP LT Gov or AG since 2014. Dems sweeping the statewide offices again changes nothing and, by themselves, would not be a big deal.
The big deal, the huge deal, is the House of Delegates. The GOP was a seat away from a super-majority and got absolutely crushed. This shows that even in traditionally red districts, Dems are fired up, GOPers are staying home, and indies are fed up.

(23,635 posts)It might feel good to be cocky. I do not think it would be politically helpful. Next year, I hope that everyone bears in mind that defeat is entirely possible.

(56,829 posts)now is the time to start kicking them when they're down - would love to see the monster upset from Jones in Alabama for the Senate, especially since the seat isn't up for re-election until 2020. Having Jeff Sessions replaced by the guy that got convictions of some KKK murderers would be sweet.

(13,305 posts)The biggest races were on friendly territory (a deep blue state against the Lt. Governor of the most unpopular politician in the country, mayoral re-election in a deep blue city, and a purple state that Hillary won last year) and were still safe, middle aged white dudes.
The historic nature of the more local races are not to be discounted, and those are the people that I hope will rise through the ranks and be taken seriously by our party.
But I hope we don't take this to mean that we can just coast and continue to run against Trump. The historic wins were historic because they were breaking the status quo. I just hope that message flows upward.

(7,684 posts)voting machines & tabulators, electronic pollbooks
There ought to be an investigation of polls such as the Rasmussen and Roanoke ones that announced that the Virginia gov's race was in a dead heat -- that kind of manipulation in concert with rigged voting machines, purged voter registrations, gerrymandering, etc. could have delivered a very different result had there not been huge turnout for that election.

(3,077 posts)I would say don't get comfy or complacent. Be a little cocky and enjoy the victory. It's something to build on. But we have to dig deep and keep fighting. We have more work to do.

(10,146 posts)I think everyone should take this victory to heart as what is possible if we work, run for office, and vote. I think they are dead wrong that it means nothing though.
I know that the sentiment is generally keep working, however, I sure felt like we had the presidential in the bag last Nov. as did the pundits.
I thought we might take the House and Senate also. So perhaps I was too cocky before, especially coming off of 8 years of rock solid Presidenting.
I dont think I was alone in feeling that way and although I worked a phone bank shift or two and knocked on some doors for HRC, it was nothing like 08 for me personally. So I think there is some validity to the statement and maybe those pundits are once bit, twice shy on pronouncing anything but a maybe.
I am not going to get too cocky.
