(30,785 posts)that Tammy is military. She is a wounded veteran, and she knows about firearms and combat. She understands, better than most people, what guns can do.
I live in the country. We have guns. I am not in favor of taking everyone's guns, but FFS! We need to control this rage and carnage.

(68,825 posts)who are supporting this ill advised challenge. In the age of Trump spend money to turn GOP seats blue...leave Democrats alone...the Senate is tough this year and we don't need this shit.

(8,957 posts)Letter to the editor today Re: Marco Rubio
Recently, I called the toll-free telephone number provided on Sen. Marco Rubios website for constituents in the Tampa Bay area since he does not have an office here. The phone rang and rang no voicemail came on, let alone a real person. I wanted to ask the senator to take action to prevent the sale of military-style weapons in light of the mass murder at the Baptist church in Texas. I wonder why I am even wasting my time. Our senator is not interested in my opinion. I am not a member of the wealthy donor class that he and far too many of politicians bow down to.

(58,785 posts)Isakson: "I firmly believe that we do not need more gun control in America; rather we need more criminal control. Therefore, I support instant background checks on all retail sales of guns to prevent convicted felons from obtaining them, but I do not support waiting periods or the registration of any firearm."
Perdue's a weasel who repeatedly makes Isakson seem as if he'd be honest with voters if only he could be. (No Republican today can, of course.) No statement about gun control ("Second Amendment" on Perdue's site, big "no" to the OP here. He and Isakson both voted to cancel Obama's rule requiring the Soc Sec Admin to report recipients of mental health disability benefits to the FBI for background checks. And that's an extremist position, no matter how many Repubs voted for it.

(34,186 posts)As long as Democrats push gun bans, there will never be compromise.
Sometimes I don't think the Democratic legislators have been paying attention to every failed gun control legislation since 1994.
Regardless I'm against useless AWBs that only serve to make Democratic gun restrictionists feel good, rile up the RKBA crowd, and not do much to stop or reduce mass shootings.

(720 posts)And are almost never used in a crime. Bump stock bans are probably doable but may not make much difference. High capacity magazine bans seem arbitrary to me - what capacity is ok and what is too many?
Disagree, and would actively oppose any such measures. Id propose a 15 round limit for handguns and 30 for semiautomatic rifles
Demsrule86
(68,825 posts)No need for individuals to have high capacity magazines...no idea what it should be... but not what it is now.

(5,455 posts)Among the states that have voters that likely would be considered against gun control are FL, ME, IN, MO, MT, ND, OH, PA, WV & WI, all of which have Democrats up for reelection in Senate races next year.
The bill is going nowhere in the Senate and I would be extremely surprised if at least some of the current Democratic Senators from the above seats refuse to vote for the AWB bill being pushed by Senators that don't have to worry about losing their seat next year.

(37,748 posts)Good ideas are rarely popular ideas.
Hence, Pet Rocks, Mood Rings and the biased, unsupported and inaccurate sentiment of "...serve to make Democratic gun restrictions feel good" when one's sacred cow (or tin god-- your choice) is being discussed.
Good ideas and Popular Ideas are two wholly different concepts. This should elude you no longer, as it so often has in past posts or yours.
Good luck!

(2,957 posts)AWB's are mostly an empty feel-good solution. Unless you take it a step further and ban ALL semi-autos it won't matter. The next shooter would just use a semi-auto like the M1a or Mini14 without those 'scary' assault weapon features like pistol grips and cause just as much carnage. How about fixing the problems with the background check system which allowed the church shooter to buy his gun to begin with. That guy should NOT have been able to buy a gun, and probably shouldn't have even been out with the population. Should have gotten a good prison term after beating up his baby.

(1,039 posts)I was reading the bill and it exempts, specifically, the Ruger mini 14.
APPENDIX AFIREARMS EXEMPTED BY THE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN OF 2017
Ruger Mini-14 (w/o folding or telescoping
18 stock or pistol grip)
http://www.ruger.com/products/mini14RanchRifle/models.html
THEIR SHORT BARRELS AND OVERALL SHORT LENGTH MAKE THEM FAVORITES IN ANY APPLICATION WHERE MANEUVERABILITY AND EASE OF HANDLING ARE PRIORITIES.
But .. specifically bans the Ruger SR-556
http://www.ruger.com/products/sr556TD/models.html
The difference between these two weapons is cosmetic, at best ... the mini is the better weapon. Both can be chambered in the same caliber, and with a few $100s in adds will look very similar. Why is the mini not as popular as the SR-556? Cost. So this bill pretty much says you can still kill the fuck out of people, you will just have to spend about $400 more to do it.

(707 posts)I sit here in Oklahoma where we have made gains flipping state districts blue. Something like this will bring division we dont need. Also it has the added benefit of not really accomplishing anything significant. We are a few weeks away from deer rifle season and many people here use AR15 style rifles for that. I know I use an AR10 a more powerful variation myself. My previous weapon was a Remington 7400 chambered in .308 and other than the stock functioned identically yet one is more comfortable but scary looking I also have used a M1 again works the same but the only difference is appearance.
Almost certainly wont pass and not at all popular in states we need to win/hold
like Missouri and North Dakota. I can already see the ads attacking politicians like McCaskill and Heitkamp for wanting to take your guns, even if they arent sponsors of the bill.
