Vanity Fair: A year after Trumps stunning election, the administration has zero legislative wins, a looming investigation hanging over their heads, and Jared and Ivanka have a pretty erratic family member/boss to deal withand New York isnt looking much prettier.
The Trump-Kushners, as much skilled branders as they are political neophytes, have not been able to privately shake concern over the looming investigation. During the weekend before Muellers first indictments were unsealed, three sources who spoke to Kushner or were familiar with his conversations told me that he worked the phones asking about whether they thought the investigation would amount to anything. Theyre in a world of shit, one of the people close to the family told me. He may seem cool, but hes sweating, and shes like her father. Shell never acknowledge it and [will] blame the media. But shes been working on her reputation forever, and now its going to suffer horrifically. And for what?'

(25,111 posts)At this point I don't think they care. As for t-rump, I think he knows and that is what frighten me the most. He's unstable and it seems like GOPers and his administration are too.

Trump is already denigrating the media, the criminal justice system, Mueller, and the intelligence
community. Like he is trying to sway the public or potential jury.

If tax legislation is signed, both Trump and the GOP don't need each other anymore.

(65,552 posts)bunch of crimes. The New York and New Jersey construction businesses are generally mob-connected, or at least paying the mob off for safety. There is not much chance the Trumps didn't enter into mob associations with eagerness, rather than with reluctant acknowledgement that it is an inescapable part of doing business.

(19,205 posts)those, 'Page Six' stories in the New York Post though. In New York the Trumps got away with practically everything, thanks to his battalion of Attorneys. Trump's Attorneys are way out of their league with the expected charges they'll all face. This isn't like any rent hike lawsuit, or rat droppings in Trump's "World Class" Restaurants.
Just like Trump found himself far, far over his head with the Presidency, he, and his Attorneys, are in deeper than they ever thought possible with the Russian investigation. Trump's usual bluster and bravado - that usually work's with the press provincially - are not going to work under this spotlight.
The Trump 'Brand' is toast. Trump's revenue stream is going to slow to a trickle, at best, and Ivanka? She'll be lucky if she can unload her stolen designs crap at bargain bins at Truck Stops along Interstates. The entire Trump clan thought they were going to drain the U.S. Treasury right into their own bank accounts. By this time this is all finished, they might be reduced to selling freezer burned 'Trump Steaks' from the trunk of their cars.

(48,097 posts)The Trumps have to be thinking of ways out of this mess.
Unless they assume they are above all of this somehow.
Yes I hope their brand is damaged forever.

(11,606 posts)Given they don't believe in compromise as an integral part of any negotiation, they set themselves up for failure in our current democracy. Instead, they are racing toward fascism, where compromise isn't necessary.

(5,815 posts)The private jets, homes (palaces) around the world, limousines, the designer clothes. The whole nine yards. But no. tRump just HAD to go for one more big thing. And they went along for it. Now everything is in jeopardy, including their freedom.
Considering how tRump acquired his riches, I am having a huge amount of difficulty working up any sympathy for their plight. Call it karma. Call it justice. Whatever you want to call it, when enough is never enough, you may get a kick in the hind quarters that millions will cheer. And would pay good money to see carried out.
I want to see this whole thing play out on the world stage. Their smug attitudes and entitled faces need to face the consequences for their crimes. And yes, I do believe there were multiple crimes committed by these people. It is high time for them to meet their fate.

(5,815 posts)But remember, tRumps ego knows no bounds. So he probably thought he could scam all of us, including Putin. He figures he is soooo smart, he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose supporters. And he really, really believes that!
So it is a little of both. tRump WAS being pushed by Putin, but his ego, massive as it is, was pushing him to go for it, too. It will be interesting to see how this works out for tRump.

(81,608 posts)THIS does NOT work like the Manhattan real estate market does, with all its corner-cutting and sweetheart deals, bullying and blustering to intimidate and bluff your opponent, fast-talking fancy convoluted deals and "arrangements", winks 'n' handshakes, and other sleazy under-the-table wheeling 'n' dealing. It's an arena where figuring out how to bend and/or get around the rules is the favorite indoor sport. Government (at least good, scrupulous, responsible government, anyway) DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY, DAMMIT!
If you're part of the government, YOU ARE A PUBLIC SERVANT. You are supposed to be in it for the people YOU SERVE. NOT for yourself. It's not supposed to be about getting rich, or fleecing the flock, or helping yourself to all the goodies you can grab before you're forced to resign in disgrace or even flirting with indictment. And these lovely people don't have a template for that. It's not who they are, what they know, how they've lived, or where they've come from. Their mistake was believing that this "presidentin'" business was merely another round of business-as-usual.
I wish I had a nickel for every argument I've had with dim bulbs who insisted the government "should be run like a BIZness!" DAMMIT, government is NOT a business!!! Its whole reason for being is NOT to make a profit. It exists to serve the needs and interests of THE PEOPLE, DAMMIT! NOT oneself.
You're NOT supposed to go into public service to pad your own pockets, DAMMIT! You're NOT supposed to go into public service to give yourself a tax cut. You're NOT supposed to go into public service with an eye toward slapping the presidential seal on everything in your golf club's pro shop, or so you can then jack up the price of membership to take advantage of your new "position".
Public service is, and should be, a higher calling. To which money-grubbers and grifters need not apply.

(9,776 posts)power, I'd say they're doing all right. Trump & Kushner seem to be raking in the dough because of the positions they hold. They have plenty of power, maybe not for legislative wins, but that's not really that important to them.
Trump or Pence will pardon anyone who is convicted, so they'll probably get to keep all their ill-gotten gains, no matter what.
Also, Trump has trashed the government in ways that it will take years and years to recover from. I'm sure that makes him, and the people who will be his benefactors after he's out of office, very happy.
Ugh, I'm sorry to be so pessimistic, but I'm not sure most people know just how much damage Trump has already done. And I'm sure I don't really know the extent of it.
