Mitch McConnell vs. Roy Moore is now a battle for the soul of the GOP

Or is it asshole of the GOP?
--------------------------------

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) effectively called Roy Moore a child molester on Monday. McConnell said he believes Moore's female accusers, apparently including the one who told The Washington Post that Moore initiated sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was 32. McConnell added that Moore should step aside.

Which means we'll now find out just how much power McConnell and the GOP establishment have to prevent someone he believes to be a child molester from joining his ranks. Or, looked at another way, we'll find out how much power they don't have.

The situation in Alabama is at once a pretty complex one and a pretty simple one. The state party has great latitude to withdraw Moore as its nominee, at which point the GOP would need to mount a write-in campaign for the seat. McConnell doesn't even have to persuade Moore to drop out; he just needs to persuade fellow leaders of his party to essentially flip a switch.

The reason McConnell and the GOP had been somewhat circumspect heading into Monday is probably 1) because they wanted to be convinced that they had a viable path to victory if they dispatched Moore, and 2) because they worried that coming down on Moore too quickly would only make getting rid of him more difficult, by causing his supporters to dig in.
The first part appears to have been satisfied — or, at the very least, McConnell seems to see no way forward other than trying to force Moore out — but the second part is still very much an open question.

McConnell obviously sold his to Chinese billionaires in return for power long ago, and Satan apparently used lust for young bodies to take Moore's at least as long ago.

It is all about power and control of the agenda. He revealed that with the 8 years of GOP obstruction during the Obama Presidency.

but scarcely flattering and another very friendly, and that's about the upshot of his record after over 30 years in politics. His ideology shifted with the times, moderate with some positions considered "liberal" now in the 1970s, then moving to match Reagan and big business's agenda, becoming Chinese business's man in DC after Tienanmen Square, and as the new billionaire class grew supporting extreme economic libertarianism in return for their patronage. But always peddling his vote, and then his increasing power, for more power.

He loves that accumulation and exercise of power but apparently has never been interested in achieving a legacy of anything worthwhile to be known by. In fact, when he finally became majority leader, after 30 years of striving to reach that position, observers wondered if he would now finally start trying to achieve something of value for the history books, and no.

what is happening, still in early stage here but with deep infiltration of our institutions, is a reordering of government to serve them. That apparently works fine for this person. He's hooked up to an enormous source of power.

And I think MyOwnPeace's right. McConnell is almost certainly amoral. Nothing there.

I wonder what the rules are about write in ballots. Will they use a strict standard to determine the intent of the voter. It is a shame it is not on a slate with the option to pull the Republican lever (or is it)?

I can't imagine the state party leaving Moore on the ballot. I wonder if Moore running to Court could delay this long enough to run the clock out on the election.

How Did Roy Moore Become A Candidate? You Can Thank Mitch McConnell.

But in light of all this, we should ask ourselves exactly how we got Roy Moore in the first place. He wasn’t the most conservative candidate. He certainly wasn’t the most well spoken. So how’d he win? Because Mitch McConnell and his merry band of Super PACs refused to support (and instead destroyed) the most conservative and least objectionable person in the race. That would be Rep. Mo Brooks. ....

McConnell backed a sleazy, corrupt toady in Luther Strange and sought to wipe out anyone in his way. (Me: Unintentionally clearing the way for Moore.)

This has happened over and over under McConnell’s leadership. In Mississippi’s last Senate primary, McConnell pulled out his bag of disgusting tricks and viciously savaged the conservative in the race. ...

Too often in the primaries, voters are left with two bad choices because the real conservative was blown up on the launch pad by the turtle man.

When the Republican national party apparatus decides they want to actually start backing real conservative candidates, we’ll start to see better men and women come out of the primaries.

https://www.redstate.com/diary/Bonchie/2017/11/10/roy-moore-become-candidate-can-thank-mitch-mcconnell./

The Kochs and their allies don't want what Red State's calling "real conservatives," of course. And better men and women in congress would be a disaster for them. They want bad conservatives.
