As brilliant an actor as Carroll is or was, and as ingenious the character is, it doesnt work without Rob being the adversary that he is.

Something about his face, looks, etc.

Rob's look and actions were tailor made to be hated by someone like Archie.

Because you pull the sock up nice and tight and slip on the shoe. No wrinkles or lumps in the sock.
If you do sock-sock then the FIRST sock has time to bunch up and make for lumps in your shoe.
