Man's best friend could also be man's best health secret.
A study in Sweden found that owning a dog is linked to a lower risk of dying earlier.
Researchers, who studied adults between the ages of 40 and 80 for 12 years found that single adults who lived alone with a dog were 33 percent less likely to die than those who lived alone without dogs.
The researchers say this could be because dog owners walk more and get more exercise - or those who want to own dogs may already lead a healthier lifestyle.

But will they live forever?
The report on the news tonight was better - spoke about healthier hearts.

Thanks for the smile, Malaise, and for confirmation of health benefits from sharing life and love with a little creature. Of course the benefits to the pet's life are indisputably enormous. Your Roots obviously had a wonderful one.

(3,608 posts)renting..makes it very difficult. So instead I have 5 cats and do some rodent rescue....ferret and 2 rabbits so plenty to keep me busy.
When I retire I will have several dogs and will help with dog and cat rescue. I will finally be the landlord.

(269,328 posts)but I've had some fun and satisfaction with the feral cats. That said cats are never as warm and loving as dogs.

(269,328 posts)although I did end up with an Irish Setter a beauty - because a very good friend loved fancy breeds and puppies, but can't handle a dog. When I saw the dog two weeks after she gave it away, I rescued it from some morons until I was able to find a good home. Give me my mixed up dogs every day of the week.

(25,816 posts)He slept outside on my doormat, even when the weather was freezing.
He was about 130 pounds and had a low growl. The best security in
the world. Once I got a phone call fro a friend who wanted to come in
but was afraid to exit his car. He disappeared out here in the boonies,
I miss him. I want another dog, but now, on a limited income, I don't think I
can finance the big, outdoor dogs I like.

Nevernose
(13,081 posts)Which are a giant pain in the ass. Neurotic and noisy and obnoxious. There are allegedly only three of them, or so people tell me, but it sure feels like there are seventeen of them. They are all on my lap, all the time.
Except when I sleep: then the chihuahua is on my face every single night and the female is disturbingly planted in my crotch when I wake up. The third one has PRECISELY mentally timed four full massages a day and freaks the hell out if I and I alone dont provide the massage.
The female, who only weighs 18 pounds, once pushed three pieces of furniture together to form a ladder to get to the kitchen counter. APES cant do that, otherwise they would have all escaped the zoo a long time ago.
My spouse says its my fault because Ive spoiled them, but what am I supposed to do? Take the dog stairs away so they cant get in bed? Take the other stairs away so they cant get in my lap on the couch? Stop sharing my people food with the female doggie? Stop coming home during lunch so the third dog can get his mid-day massage? What am I? Some kind of fucking monster?
