What McConnell is telling voters is - go ahead and vote for Roy Moore - we'll expell him and give you another chance to vote for an R.

If Roy pulls through on Dec. 12, I see McConnell expressing his deep, personal disappointment in the voters of Alabama, but now that the people have spoken, he doesn't have any choice - none whatsoever - but to swear in Roy Moore as the junior senator from Alabama as dictated by the law and Constitution. Darn it all!

McConnell will then gladly take Moore's vote on any bill or nomination coming before the Senate because of his deep, abiding respect for the people of the great state of Alabama to choose a child molester as their Senator. He really wishes he didn't have to, but whaddyagunnado?

As bad as McConnell is, he's not stupid. He knows that being the "Party of pedophiles" going in to the 2018 Election is not a great platform on which to maintain his position as Majority Leader.
