Forget parroting partisan news sources used only to further your own confirmation bias. Forget "whataboutisms," the "Billy did it too defense," used to deflect any criticism.
Let's use our own eyes and ears:
I saw with my own eyes djt mock a disabled person. You saw it too. I hear with my own ears djt disparage others with childish name calling. You hear it too. These are behaviors we saw and hear. There is no twisting, no spinning. They are factual and obvious.
I see djt supporters as victims of a fear, greed and resentment-based communal psychosis they cannot or refuse to see. Minimizing, defending and rationalizing his behavior for one of two reasons:
1). Belief djt's alleged monetary brilliance will somehow fatten their own wallets (greed) or;
2). A perverse glee that he is sticking it to libtards, snowflakes,'them Mex-cans,' baby-killers, Jesus-less cretins, BLM, pointy-headed college types and other assorted, despised groups (fear and resentment).
In this area, SE Indiana, I don't think most people are delusional enough to believe #1, so I'm going with #2 as the most likely reason for support of djt. Not only here, but in the vast majority of rural America.

(5,730 posts)Remember, "Jews, will not, replace us," and the woman they murdered. They love the RW blacks who agree with them.
That's Not to say that their isn't a racial factor. Clearly, they are mostly racists against anyone different, blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, refugees....

(36,567 posts)The democratic agenda. They didn't want to vote for Moore, but they would because of their fear of the democratic agenda. These people have been brainwashed for over three decades to hate liberals. They would rather vote for a child molester than a democrat.
One awful woman (this was online, not the MSNBC show) stated that deciding between a child molester or someone who is pro-abortion was such a difficult choice for her. WTF? A clump of cells vs a living breathing child & she can't tell the difference. These people are addled by religion.

(6,154 posts)You're talking about a kiss or a grab vs. murder in their eyes. It's a HUGE deal.
You are reminding me of how easy it would be for Moore to win by reminding everyone that he is the "Pro-Life" candidate. Jones can't fight that.
It's highly likely that Moore will win. But DUers could make a difference by getting involved in the race. Even if just sending money.

(20,795 posts)The southern strategy is real and now permeates much of the gop base.
However, in recent smaller elections, 45's endorsement failed, and may still fail in Alabama.

(16,899 posts)I merely tell the truth.
I use Trump's words in quotes, post links to what he has said....gets Trump supporters mad as hell. Then having them defend the indefensible is a thing of beauty because they make fools of themselves. It displays the fact that they have been conned by a con man. Their ignorance is on full display for others to read that may know these people.
I do not name call. I keep to the topic at hand. As it has been said, "the truth will set you free." With Trump supporters, it only makes them madder and look less credible when they attack me, which is quite often.

(16,899 posts)My latest letter to the Editor of our local newspaper was tying Trump's attraction to Authoritarianism to the classic novel by George Orwell's 1984. I have a post here on that as well, with a few edits. Not one vilifying comment from Trump supporters, just kudos from people who know me on writing a letter that tells the truth. Donald Trump's words and actions continue to prove me correct, and they hate that.

(22,971 posts)Although I'd add racism as an additional reason for a majority of Trump supporters. They either agree with his racism or are willing to ignore it. Both equally egregious.

(836 posts)For me, racism, greed, resentment, etc. - all of our "shortcomings" - are rooted in fear.
I have only three states of mind, and I can only occupy one of these states at a time. These states are fear, indifference and humility. All of my "shortcomings" arise out of fear, and all of my altruism from humility.

(22,971 posts)I'm surprised that you only experience three states of mind. Please don't take this the wrong way, but are you by any chance an Aspie?

I don't have Asperger's syndrome, but I'm definitely wired a different way.

(22,971 posts)Aspie is a term people with Asbergers syndrome often use to refer to themselves and each other. They refer to people like me as "neuro-typical," with just a hint of pity in their voice.

(14,501 posts)Greed, fear and resentment, pumped to the level of feeling helpless. Then, tell them only tRump can fix these things.
The irony is that there's no factual basis for triggering these emotions. We must also point out the lies behind those appeals.
However, probably best to approach one lie at a time, and keep a factual bucket list.

(10,252 posts)I long ago gave up trying to reason with Trumpsters. It is non-productive. They are ignorant, hateful people, whose minds are filled with delusions and bigotry. They don't care about ethics, competence, or compassion. I think it is much more productive to reason with people, who hopelessly have given up on voting.

(16,955 posts)from an old TV show with Ben Gazzara - "Run for Your Life" - it was rolling around in my brain for years and I found that it is from William Lloyd Garrison:
With reasonable men, I will reason; with humane men I will plead; but to tyrants I will give no quarter, nor waste arguments where they will certainly be lost.

(836 posts)I like this one -
"Our country is the world, our countrymen are all mankind. We love the land of our nativity only as we love all other lands. The interests, rights, and liberties of American citizens are no more dear to us than are those of the whole human race. Hence we can allow no appeal to patriotism to revenge any national insult or injury." - William Lloyd Garrison
Went to post it on FB but chickened out... I envisioned friends and family shaking their heads and mouthing, "libtard."

(6,139 posts)fear of non-whites taking over the country. Everything is just a cover. The only exceptions are non-whites who voted for trump but there arent as many. Anti-immigrant hispanics voted based on that stance alone and blacks who hate their own community (Clerence Thomas and Ben Carson types). This election was 100% about race so it doesnt matter what trump says, hell get those votes. Racism is fear and it overshadows rational thinking in those who are less educated. They are willing to destroy the country if it means destroying non-whites. This is also why engaging with trump supporters is not productive because, their support is based on animalistic insticts not reason.
