My father was born on this day in 1909.

He died in 1960 before his 51st birthday.

I cannot imagine what he would think of the world today. He would be amazed and appalled.

Each of his three children took time to think when we had our 50th birthday. I am now 68, my brother will be 71 soon and our sister is 74.

1. My Dad has been gone since 1987-- a moderate Republican and I can't imagine how he'd feel

And as much as I wish he were still here, a tiny tiny tiny part of me is glad he never had the opportunity to watch Fox. My Dad was a good man and not at all stupid, but he could be influenced by men around him in social settings and... as recent documentaries have pointed out, Fox has been effective at brainwashing. While I want to believe he'd been immune, it is something that I'm glad I never had to see.

in response to the race riots, assassinations, etc of the 60s that frightened them. But it was Fox News that turned them into right wing extremists with whom I couldn't discuss a whole range of topics without a fight. My Mom died two years ago at 92 and my Dad died last year at 93. I don't know what they would have made of Trump.

There is no doubt that both my parents would be appalled by what is happening in our country.

I salute your Father's memory, and his children's reflections on that

He was part of the Greatest Generation.

His parents and grandparents were immigrants to the US from Germany and Russia, Dad was born in 1930, and didn't learn English until he went to school when he was 5.

He saw it all from the Depression, to WW2, served in Korea and really hated it, bitched at Vietnam and Iraq War protestors, was a Rush Limbaugh/Faux "news" junkie and all that goes with it.

In some ways I miss him, other ways I don't.

6. I have very few memories of him.

I was 10 the summer he died. I remember episodes but nothing in general. My knowledge of him came from my mother and other family members. I choose to believe he was as open minded and liberal as Mother. My husband says his father became more conservative as he aged, his son has become more liberal or at least more verbal about it.

we were the only Dem family on the block....(Kane County, IL). He was always a liberal and got more liberal as he got older.....even more so than me for chrissakes. He would've been appalled at the W years, and I can't even imagine what he would think now....

and died at 59. He was a WWII vet. The United States today under Trump and the repulsive Republican Congress would be incomprehensible, infuriating and unrecognizable to him (particularly, but not exclusively, Nazi's marching in the streets).

There and in his life after he was a meat cutter and cook. He had a back injury (there were differing stories about training and lifting a side of beef) and was discharged. He never left the states.
