General Discussion

Personally, I hate it. I would rather stab myself in the eye than participate. There is no material object than I want enough to justify getting up early, standing in long lines, dealing with huge, rude crowds and all the general chaos.
I hate shopping on an ordinary day and buy most of what I need online anyway. Just wondering what people here think. Also, I am wondering what workers think if you are affected by it. If you do work those shifts, do you make extra money? And if so, is it worth it?
Discuss.

(23,368 posts)Deals aren't that good. Hate crowds. If I'm going to shop, I save it for Small Business Saturday or Cyber Monday.

(7,326 posts)I went to my local medical marijuana center and was surprised to see a long line.
I didn't mind when I got inside. 25% off and a free gram to the first 450 customers.

I've never been a big shopper the rest of the year.
I don't go to malls. I frequent local strip centers instead. The ones with Barnes and Noble, Ulta Beauty Supply, Sally's Beauty Supply, Best Buy, Bath and Body Works, Lowe's, Bed, Bath and Beyond etc.) With all of the selection at these types of stores and at my age, there is no need to go to the mall.
The rest of the year, I try to avoid shopping on Saturdays.
I even avoid grocery shopping on Sundays.
I don't like crowds.
It is Saturday afternoon after Black Friday, if we have a shopping loving crowd on DU, they are probably out and about right now! Unfortunately, they probably won't get a chance to read this thread.

(6,402 posts)Don't have much use for it now since most of what I want I get through amazon with cheap movies and that's about it. My youngest daughter had a blast doing it Friday morning with friends and just being out and picking up some fun stuff. She scored some good deals cheap to get things for friends for Christmas, which at 15 with a limited budget is a good thing.

(25,812 posts)Walgreen's used to carry a special dry mouth product, they stopped carrying in stores, so I buy it online.
I buy a sprinkler from Nelson which they only carry online.
The only way I can buy my nail stickers is through an online company called Jamberry.

(4,492 posts)I normally don't like Black Friday, but when I was hanging out wtih a hometown friend, she wanted to go shopping so I went along with it.
It was crazy but we had fun.
The rest of the weekend I am adding more things to my Etsy shop for Cyber Monday and the rest of the holidays.

(26,333 posts)Actually, most years I don't leave the house from Wednesday through 'Black' Friday. When this house was built, it was out in the country. Now it is in the 'retail' part of town. There's a big mall, right down the road, in one direction, and a whole lot of 'strip malls' in the other.

(100,150 posts)The commercialism of it continues to reach new levels of insanity every year. No, you do not need to give someone a $5,000 TV, or a $50,000 luxury car. Especially in this climate where most Americans barely have $1,000 to their name. Companies like Best Buy and Target have turned the simple act of gift giving into a fucking contact sport. Like you must go for broke during the holidays and spend $5,000 more than the next guy / woman. And don't get me started on the luxury car companies and their winter sales events. I think advertising ruins everything and this is one of those things that it has ruined.
