The plaque in question reads: .. In honor and memory of the Confederate soldiers of Jefferson County, who served in the War Between the States. Erected by the .. United Daughters of the Confederacy .. May 25, 1986.
Critics .. point out that West Virginia was part of the Union, and there is no plaque on the courthouse honoring Union soldiers. Nor is there acknowledgment that enslaved people were once sold on the courthouse steps ...
