For my 700th post on DU, a little reflection....

I didn't want to waste my 700th post on a "me too" throwaway, so I thought I would mark the occasion with a little reflection about the past year.

Like many of us, I was absolutely stunned last year on Election Night. I guess I had too much confidence in the polls, and the thought that at the end of that night, there was no way that this country would elect that idiot as president. I couldn't sleep for days after Election Day, and in some ways, I still can't believe that he is the President of this country.

I think it really hit home for me a couple of days later. I think it was on Thursday of that week when the Obamas invited the Trumps to the White House in what has become a tradition. As I was watching that on TV, it was so surreal to see Trump, whom I've always thought of as a boorish, clownish joke, sitting there amid all the pomp and protocol of the White House. To see that clown in a setting that was supposed to be serious just pushed me over the line. "He doesn't belong there," was what I wanted to scream at the TV and to anyone who would listen. He looked absolutely scared to death that day, and that actually gave me a little bit of peace, if you can believe that. To see him there, obviously in WAY over his head, looking around for anyone, ANYONE to just save him and get him out of there, proved to me that he never wanted the job, and he never thought that he would win.

Over the past year, I feel like we've been trapped in a never-ending loop of The Emperor's New Clothes. To see all these supposedly Very Serious People talk about Trump as if he's in the same league as Obama and Clinton is just infuriating to me. It's the same feeling I had when they were talking about Sarah Palin in the same breath as Hillary. Absolutely ridiculous!

I think that America has finally come to its senses, and I'm encouraged by what happened in Virginia and New Jersey. May that momentum keep going throughout the next year!
