Indiana RFRA deal sets limited protections for LGBT

Source: Indianapolis Star

Indiana Republican leaders are vetting a deal with key business leaders that grants protection for gay and lesbian residents from the state's controversial "religious freedom" law.

A copy of the language obtained by The Indianapolis Star was being presented to Gov. Mike Pence Wednesday morning. The measure would specify that the new religious freedom law cannot be used as a legal defense to discriminate against residents based on their sexual orientation.

The measure goes much further than a "preamble" that was proposed earlier in the week, explaining exactly what the RFRA law does. But it doesn't go as far as establishing gays and lesbians as a protected class of citizens or repealing the law outright, both things that Republican leaders have said they could not support.

The clarification would say that the new "religious freedom" law does not authorize a provider – including businesses or individuals -- to refuse to offer or provide its services, facilities, goods, or public accommodation to any member of the public based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Last time I checked they are just people and deserve the SAME EXACT PROTECTION as everyone else. 'Limited' to me means there is some wriggle room for discrimination. This should be interesting.

It will be seen as playing games. People are not stupid. This will cause even more protests.

I know GOPers don't know America's history but remember the separate but equal bullshit which "was" in the history books? Apparently, Americans are re-living this nightmare all over again in the 21st century.

I suspect that this law still allows people to refuse to sell morning after pills and other drugs to women. Although that may already exist under the federal law.

The difference between making sexual preference/identity a protected class and their "clarification" is silly. It's obviously intended to sound good yet still mollify the homophobes upon whom the GOP relies for support.
