Widespread power outages sweep Washington, D.C.
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN) - Widespread power outages hit across Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, affecting government and privately-owned buildings intermittently early in the afternoon.
A Pepco spokesman told CNN that the power utility company is aware of the outages and is investigating the source of the problem.
The outage struck everything from the White House to the State Department, where government employees and reporters saw lights and power flicker out. Power at CNN's D.C. bureau twice flickered off and on early in the afternoon.
The power went out during the daily State Department briefing, with Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf using a phone light to continue taking questions from reporters:

NBC just reported that the U. of Maryland campus in College Park is now closed for the day.
WUSA9 tv's website says the outage was caused when a large transformer exploded
"WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- An explosion at a Maryland power plant is to blame for a region-wide power outage that has impacted the White House, the Capitol, the University of Maryland and other buildings in D.C. and Maryland on Tuesday afternoon, according to an official. "

WJLA tv reports several generating units failed:
"PJM Interconnection, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in numerous states including D.C. and Maryland, told ABC7 News that several generating units tripped and went offline. Spokesman Ray Dotter said PJM was attempting to restart the power stations, but there was no estimated time for power restoration.
The utility company Pepco, which directly serves many of the areas impacted, said it was investigating the outage reports. Spokesman Sean Kelly said he did not have details about specific outage locations or how many customers were affected.
Officials with the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency told ABC7 News that there were no indications that the electrical problems were the result of a terrorist event. "

You do realize that technology isn't infallible, and our power grid is orders of magnitude more reliable than others.
Your faith in the government to handle shit with a perfect record is contradicted by historical evidence. The space shuttle program being the most glaring and prime example.
Regulations are necessary and some industries need to be heavily regulated. But to blame something like this on corporate greed, with no real evidence, and when the problem was solved within hours is a little disingenuous.

(9,898 posts)a little concerning that our government doesn't have back up power. I mean, OK the Portrait Gallery, but the State Department? I assume the really important stuff is powered no matter what. Wouldn't want to hear -"Israel launches attack on Saudia Arabia, power outage in the District prevents President Obama from learning of the incident until the following day."

(4,788 posts)but our General Services department got the emergency generators on line very quickly and there were no more interruptions. I didn't really know about the problem until my husband called just as I was about to leave to tell me to check on Metro. By that time there were no problems at all.
