Webb (D-VA) touts experience, military service in Council Bluffs

Source: nonpareilonline

By John Schreier

Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, opened a four-day tour of Iowa with a meet-and-greet Thursday at the Council Bluffs Public Library.

During his visit, the former Secretary of the Navy touted not only his military credentials but also his experience in foreign policy and Washington. He cited the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill he authored, signed into law into 2008, as an example of a triumph to help what he called the “next Greatest Generation.”

“At a time when Washington was paralyzed, we were able to build a coalition in 16 months,” Webb said.

The presidential hopeful, who said he wanted to restore Democratic Party of FDR and Truman of bringing a voice to the voiceless, laid out the following topics as his priorities:

Reorienting” a national security policy
• Economic fairness and social justice
• A balance of power between Congress and the presidency
• A “writ large” reformation of the criminal justice system

But I would vote for Jim Webb long before I'd ever vote for Hillary.

It isn't just about stands on specific issues ... it's about temperament, about being willing to be different, to challenge the establishment. Webb is not a conventional politician and that is a plus, in my opinion.

But when it came to actual legislation, Webb used his six years in the US Senate to stand in the way of Democratic efforts to combat climate change. Virginia, after all, is a coal state, and Webb regularly stood up for the coal industry, earning the ire of environmentalists. As Grist's Ben Adler succinctly summed it up, "Jim Webb sucks on climate change."

Perhaps Webb's biggest break with the standard Democratic position on climate is his vocal opposition to the use of EPA rules under the Clean Air Act to limit carbon emissions from coal power plants. Earlier this year, the Obama administration proposed regulations that could cut existing coal plant emissions by as much as 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. Those new rules became a key factor in the historic climate deal Obama recently reached with China, and they will almost certainly figure prominently in next year's Paris climate negotiations. But back in 2011, Webb went to the floor of the Senate to denounce the idea that the federal government has the power to regulate carbon emissions under existing law. "I am not convinced the Clean Air Act was ever intended to regulate or classify as a dangerous pollutant something as basic and ubiquitous in our atmosphere as carbon dioxide," he said.

--------------------

and he is not a liberal by any means

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/09/23/really-jim-webb-for-president/

read it....

just a small sample:

Among the hits that would resurface in a presidential campaign:

Webb has spoken fondly of his Confederate roots and defended the Southern states' decision to secede, even citing the "Nazification of the Confederacy."
He said in 2004 that John Kerry deserved to be condemned for his actions in opposition to the Vietnam War.
Webb's writings and comments have been criticized by the left for being insensitive to women.

-----------------------

Then this:

In the piece, he argued against race-based diversity programs like Affirmative Action and said that poor and working-class Southern whites have been ignored by policy-makers and lumped together into "a fungible monolith." He wrote about the lack of college degrees in this group, painting a more diverse picture of white America.

Contrary to assumptions in the law, white America is hardly a monolith. And the journey of white American cultures is so diverse (yes) that one strains to find the logic that could lump them together for the purpose of public policy.

Heck, I wouldn't be shocked if one or two of them even preferred Ted Cruz over Hillary.

Thousands of words written here about how awful Hillary is so it's time to have a little balance.

I figure those who support him really don't know his record.

If every single Hillary move is posted here, then it's fair to post about others.
It's not "Hillaryland" it's called a discussion group.

I know you would like for people who support Hillary to stay quiet, but no such luck.

ETA: I just saw your negative LBN post about Hillary's poll numbers. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Right Larry?

I'd rather see the DU going after opinions rather than individuals for their opinions. But I break that rule too. Ask anybody.

Anyway it looks like Nancy didn't mind, so I sure don't. I'm going to self delete the comment.

All of the possible candidates are "not liberal enough" on something.

I like his stands on the issues I mentioned; the white Southern heritage thing, not so much.

Actually I'd like to see him get into the race. He'd cut into Clinton's support among the redneck demographic and make it easier for an actual Democrat to get nominated.

So "militarist" is unfair.

Of course he will just be another Wall Street tool like Hillary, but unlike her, with her high negatives on both the right and the left, he has a chance of winning the election.

If he was the Democratic nominee, I'd hold my nose and a couple other body parts, and vote for him, because I can't see him as worst for this country than the republican candidate ... even if he won't serve my personal interests.

Then, move the hell out of this country if he won.
