NYC council to renew call to hire 1,000 more police officers

Source: AP

By JONATHAN LEMIRE

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Council is poised to renew its call to hire 1,000 more officers for the police department, potentially setting up a repeat clash with Mayor Bill de Blasio about the headcount of the nation's largest police force.

The council will release its budget presentation on Tuesday and will include funding to hire the additional officers, council staffers told The Associated Press on Sunday. The council made the same proposal a year ago but it was rejected by de Blasio and not included in the final budget for fiscal year 2015, which began July 1.

"In order for NYPD to continue to keep New Yorkers safe while also implementing new reforms and initiatives we need to increase the overall headcount of the department," City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said in a statement Sunday night. "The Council's plan to increase headcount while also including cost control measures is fiscally responsible and will go a long way toward ensuring public safety and better community relations."

The council, which is composed of 48 Democrats and just 3 Republicans, has largely marched in lockstep with de Blasio, a Democrat, as he has acted to expand the role of city government in people's lives, particularly the less fortunate. But the debate over hiring the additional officers a year ago was a rare moment of disagreement as de Blasio turned down the request, citing record low crime numbers and suggesting that the money would be better spent elsewhere.

the population for New York.
Would be a different story if they wanted to hire on another 10k or more though but 1k is really a minor number which isnt a big concern, now a big concern imo is how are they going to filter out the ones who should never be given a badge and also how are they going to ensure they get the proper training so as to avoid things like that shooting down in SC?

i'm saying that as a man -- I don't know the last time I heard about a questionable female officer involved shooting, but would loved to be informed if there is a large number of incidents that I haven't heard of...

I would love to see that in every possible occupation, frankly

(let's match the demographics of the city with that of the force entrusted to protect and serve)

It makes me want to require guns have live-upload video cameras built in that activate when pulled from the holster for ALL police/law enforcement.... maybe if they knew they were pulling a camera along with a gun, they'd realize they are either going to protect or expose themselves, depending on circumstances.

You cannot point to why New York City needs a bunch of new officers
Unless they're planning to revamp the whole force

And given the size of New Yorks police department it will probably at a guess take 5 - 10 years if you want them to do it right, of course if you prefer a halfass attempt they could just fire them all and hire replacements off the street.
Oh and BTW London has a police force nearly as large though I kinda doubt they did the hiring off the street method.

Seems like the absence of all those tickets being written and constant harassment by police was perceived as a breath of fresh air.

But maybe they gotta find a way to make up the revenue they lost during that temper tantrum..

Also, if I did the calculation right the current force of 34,000+ is enough for 1 police officer for every 247 residents of New York City (8.406 million). I believe 1 for every 500 is considered sufficient. In the case for NYC I believe the ratio should be even higher as they don't need to cover as much territory when much of NYC consists of high rises compared to many locales that have single dwelling homes. NYC should be able to eliminate at least half of their current officers.

Consider that NYC is easily able to mount a force at rallies and other public events.
