An unpaid Oklahoma reserve deputy was charged Monday with manslaughter in the death of a suspect whose shooting was captured on videotape, media reports say.
Second-degree manslaughter charges were filed against reserve deputy Robert Charles "Bob" Bates, 73, in the shooting death of Eric Courtney Harris, 44, District Attorney Stephen Kunzwieler said Monday afternoon according to local news outlets.

Makes one wonder if these charges would have been filed without a video.

(25,285 posts)I thought a pistol has a handle/grip and a trigger. Does a taser work the same way? I was thinking just by the feel of each - one could distinguish whether you are holding a pistol/revolver versus a taser/stun gun. Am I wrong?

Yes, it is a very dumb idea to shape them like guns.

UPDATE: A reserve deputy who fatally shot a man during an undercover gun sting was charged with second-degree manslaughter Monday afternoon, according to a press release from the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office.
Mr. Bates is charged with Second-Degree Manslaughter involving culpable negligence. Oklahoma law defines culpable negligence as the omission to do something which a reasonably careful person would do, or the lack of the usual ordinary care and caution in the performance of an act usually and ordinarily exercised by a person under similar circumstances and conditions, District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said in the statement.
The defendant is presumed to be innocent under the law, but we will be prepared to present evidence at future court hearings."

"Tulsa Sheriff Stanley Glanz, 72, said he had been friends with Mr Bates for 50 years, and that Mr Bates had been his insurance agent. He showed the Tulsa World newspaper a photograph of them fishing together.
Sheriff Glanz told Tulsa World: "Bob and I both love to fish. Is it wrong to have a friend? He made an error. How many errors are made in an operating room every week?"

(41,999 posts)They don't let people drive without licenses if they give cars to the DMV. They don't let we therapists screw around with peoples' wellbeing if we donate money in lieu of having training. I swear, they don't give two rips about themselves, the citizens, the fact that they have a job that is a statement of trust.
I would fear the police more if they gave any indication that they had a nefarious vision, but as near as I can tell they're all too often the disorganized, selfish, reckless thugs they presume others to be.

(24,345 posts)That guy should be charged as well
And no, there wouldn't have been charges because it would have been his word against the corpse with no witnesses other than police
