'Drop the death penalty,' say parents of Boston bombing victim

BOSTON (Reuters) - The parents of the boy who was the youngest to die in the attack on the Boston Marathon asked federal prosecutors to abandon their effort to sentence the bomber to death, in a statement on the front page of the Boston Globe on Friday.
Bill and Denise Richard, parents of 8-year-old Martin Richard, instead urged the U.S. Department of Justice to seek a deal in which Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was convicted last week of the 2013 attack, would waive his appeal rights in exchange for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
"We know that the government has its reasons for seeking the death penalty, but the continued pursuit of that punishment could bring years of appeals and prolong reliving the most painful day of our lives," the couple wrote in a statement titled "To end the anguish, drop the death penalty."

(83,979 posts)Bill Richard had to triage his whole family or lose them all. They lost Martin. I understand why they want to put this to rest. Bless them all and rest in peace Martin.

Horrible what he and his brother did. Should pay the max. People died.
The capital punishment thing - I'm not 100% against it but I'm not 100% for it either.
I sure don't want to make him some sort of martyr. NO FRICKIN' WAY!!!!!
If he has expressed a wish to die, then I'm inclined NOT to want to give him what he wants. His victims and their families sure won't ever get what THEY might want (their loved ones back, their legs or hearing or full use of their bodies back, both feet back, sleep with no nightmares, life without PTSD).
