Thousands in Germany protest against Europe-U.S. trade deal

Source: Yahoo

BERLIN (Reuters) - Thousands of people marched in Berlin, Munich and other German cities on Saturday in protest against a planned free trade deal between Europe and the United States that they fear will erode food, labor and environmental standards.

Opposition to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is particularly high in Germany, in part due to rising anti-American sentiment linked to revelations of U.S. spying and fears of digital domination by firms like Google.

A recent YouGov poll showed that 43 percent of Germans believe TTIP would be bad for the country, compared to 26 percent who see it as positive.

The level of resistance has taken Chancellor Angela Merkel's government and German industry by surprise, and they are now scrambling to reverse the tide and save a deal which proponents say could add $100 billion in annual economic output on both sides of the Atlantic.

A million people could march on Washington over this and most of the other 300+million would never know it happened. If the press bothered to covered it all the it would be because someone allegedly threw a rock, and the number of protesters would be reported as around 1,000 "dirty fucking hippies" who cops in riot gear were forced to beat the shit out of because they feared for their lives.

their actions regarding their food, etc. Some of them are trying to hold onto civil society to protect themselves against corporate rule.

This beast is not an all Obama or all USA trade agreement. It's been signed on since 2005, and Obama hasn't pandered to one side or the other. It was a bad deal in 2005, and has been waiting for 10 years to be reformed, then seen through the Congress.

It will still be debated and may not pass muster in Congress. The fast tracking only means no amendments at that level because that won't work with international agreements. That would be unilateral changes that the rest of the nations were not involved in making, thus negating all these years of negotiations.

What I see as Obama's purpose is to keep us in the trade loop, as honestly, China, etc. don't need us. We'd be completely shut out and we need trade more than some think we do. It's an unfortunate reality that this is no longer FDR's America with as many choices as there were then.

We are for the most part, urban and need goods shipped in. We no longer have the traditional industrial base we built through private capital funding the war effort of WW2. We no longer have open land and resources to use to make goods and build things.

We have not been successful in getting much passed in terms of our relations with other nations. The GOP has refused UN resolutions to end forced child marriages, abuse of the disabled, and many others. Because of their fetus fetish.

Congress might have refused to ratify the nuclear proliferation treaty or the chemical weapons convention. They withhold aid to any country that does not meet their radical ideology and hate the UN since they are Birchers, just like almost all CTers are, just packaged for a new generation, with the same result as the Koch agenda revealed by Bernie Sanders, but all dressed up as civil libertarianism.

Of course, they won't admit that they are a creation of the business class, first and foremost and no matter what they think they are pushing, it's for the business class.

Their reasons for not ratifying treaties?

Because: evil NWO Illuminati UN baby killer homosexualist commies.

Or because: Obama. Carter. FDR.

Or whatever their hate du jour is going to be, as time passes and they reinforce the rule of Ayn Rand's global Supermen.

I support those Europeans who are involved in things like this, but not the ones who are anarchists as that just plays into the hands of the plutocrats in the end. JMHO.

"We are for the most part, urban and need goods shipped in. We no longer have the traditional industrial base we built through private capital funding the war effort of WW2. We no longer have open land and resources to use to make goods and build things."

We have more "open land and resources to use to make goods and build things" than a lot of other countries. Maybe we have used our resources more, but we are very creative. We should be focusing on re-industrializing our country with the new technology that we have, not on importing and buying junk from the rest of the world. We could produce really good products here. Our population is well educated and can learn skills. The trade agreements make us uncompetitive. We could do so much better if we did not have them. And if we want to help other countries, we would be able to give them more aid if we had a better developed industrial base with environmentally friendly technology here at home.

The trade agreements just enable corporations to export pollution and environmentally risky industrial processes. They hide from Americans the reality of the dire state of our earth's environment. It's a hideous deception.

I oppose these "free" trade agreements and support responsible one-on-one trade agreements with enforceable protections for labor and the environment -- enforceable in the existing courts provided for by our Constitution and laws.

25. Thousands march in EUROPE against US-EU free trade pact... not just GERMANY

Apr 2015

Berlin (AFP) | 18 April 2015 21:35

Resistance to the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is fierce in Germany, with tens of thousands joining demonstrations across the country, a spokesman for lobby group Attac Germany said.

In southern Germany’s Munich alone, 23,000 people joined the protest, while 2,000 turned up in Leipzig, 1,000 in Stuttgart and 700 in Frankfurt.

Demonstrations in other European cities also drew protesters, including 2,000 in Brussels, 1,000 in Madrid and Helsinki, and around 300 in Warsaw and Prague.

The protests came as US and EU officials are set to resume a new round of negotiations in New York on Monday.

The EU-US trade deal would not just slash the already low trade tariffs the two parties share but would also harmonise regulations to an unprecedented degree, affecting goods and services as far-ranging as Roquefort cheese and accounting.

But campaigners in Europe are convinced that powerful interests are selling the consumer short in the secret negotiations..............................

with 753 registered events all over the world, mostly in Europe, but also quite a few in the US:

https://www.globaltradeday.org/en/events/article/list-of-events

Called the Global Day of Action, the international protests — primarily in Europe and U.S. — come ahead of the ninth round of talks for the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which begin in New York City on April 20.

http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/4/17/global-day-of-action-against-ttip-tpp.html

Protesters across the EU and US have staged a day of action against an emerging free trade pact between the two continents. They fear it could see corporate interests undermine workers’ rights and consumer protection.

Crowds have gathered in London, Munich, Brussels and other major European cities to march against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and similar secretive international trade deals.

The day of action consisted of over 700 separate events, including rallies, marches and public statements. All were organized by a variety of civil rights movements in the EU and across the Atlantic. Once the attendance has been officially counted and thus confirmed, it could mark what might have been the largest protest against free trade agreements to date.
