5 attacks thwarted in France since January, premier says

Source: AP

PARIS (AP) — France's prime minister says five attacks have been thwarted in France since a January assault by Islamic extremist gunmen left 20 people dead, including the attackers.

Manuel Valls told France Inter radio on Thursday that the five included the planned attack officials said was thwarted Sunday when the would-be gunman apparently shot himself in the leg by accident and called for an ambulance, raising the suspicion of the police.

"The threat has never been so significant," Valls said.

Authorities say the 24-year-old Algerianarrested in Paris on Sunday was targeting one or more churches and was linked to the shooting death of a young woman. The computer science student had been flagged as a security risk this year and in 2014, but managed to amass an arsenal of weapons.

An Islamic extremist with an arsenal of heavy weapons planned an imminent attack on one or more French churches, France's top security official said Wednesday, announcing the arrest of the man who is also accused in the death of a young mother, Aurelie Chatelain, a 32-year-old Frenchwoman visiting Paris for a training session for her work. Of course the death of anyone, no matter how young or charming is tragic. But Aurelie Chatelain, the 32 year old mother and dance professor looked particularly sweet, gentle, and full of life.

Unfortunately, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I doubt the murderer, if this guy is the murderer, even knew her beforehand.

France 'foils five terror attacks' - PM Valls

French police have foiled five terror attacks in recent months, Prime Minister Manuel Valls has said. He said the latest was a planned attack on churches in Villejuif outside Paris. An Algerian man was arrested on Sunday over the alleged plan, after he apparently shot himself by accident and called an ambulance.
(snip)

Mr Ghlam was also linked to the murder of a 32-year-old woman, Aurelie Chatelain, who was found dead in her car in Villejuif on Sunday.

Prosecutors said traces of her blood were found on one of Mr Ghlam's jackets.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Ghlam was known to security services as having expressed a wish to travel to Syria to fight with Islamist militants.
