McCain: Rand Paul 'Worst Possible Candidate' On National Security
Source: TPM

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Wednesday took a jab at Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and his presidential run, declaring Paul to be the worst Republican on security issues.
"Sen. Paul is the worst possible candidate of the 20 or so that are running on the most important issue, which is national security," McCain told Fox News' Neil Cavuto. "The record is very clear that he simply does not have an understanding about the needs and the threats of United States national security."
McCain was responding to Paul's Tuesday comment that McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) were Obama's "lapdogs."
And even though McCain relentlessly mocked Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) earlier this week, he said he'd prefer Cruz over Paul. "Ted Cruz has a much better handle on our national security issues," McCain said.

(12,466 posts)I sense a manipulation in the mix. Why is he trashing his own cronies? What will be the gain down the primary campaign trail?
Just a feeling.

(60,536 posts)when he hadn't. He back pedaled the next day, calling Cruz something like a "good guy, a good Senator." McCain might just be jealous, he had to wait in the wings of the Party before he could obtain the GOP nomination. Carnival Cruz and Randy Rand are in their first terms and running.

Talk about a circle jerk- McCain, Cavuto, Paul, Cruz, and Graham.

(3,051 posts)He's not up to something.
He's just really, really, stupid with the amazing sense of entitlement and self-worth that comes from the combo of being surrounded by "yes" men and being so stupid that you think you are smart.
Second biggest putz in the Senate (not talking politics-wise, talking personality/intelligence wise).

(29,322 posts)I live in Arizona. Trust me you're right.
He obsessed over building the "dang fence" so much oh god he wouldn't stop talking about the "fence". I can't find that excellent 4 page article on drug trafficking but the "fence" was a highlight.
Drug Smugglers Use Catapult to Launch Bales of Pot Across Border
Grainy surveillance video shows drug smugglers putting a new twist on their crime by using a catapult to launch small bales of marijuana across the Arizona-Mexico border.
The video was taken the night of Jan. 21 by National Guard troops monitoring a series of surveillance cameras near Naco, Ariz., officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

The same 4 page article also highlighted there was also a push to send more border agents right now so that to hire more, took shortcuts such as background checks which meant finding border agents to bribe were easier to find. Basically highlights the stupidity from the idea McCain thought was so smart

(3,051 posts)(Really his aides) on a bill. (I was working with a Democratic Senator.)
Anyway, we spent many hours together, including a small plane ride from AZ to Washington DC.
Every day, he met me for the first time. As it, he'd introduce himself warmly, shake my hand, and ask me my name. It was clear he had no recollection of me because I was not significant enough for him.
Now, this is hardly an uncommon problem in DC. Sen. Kay Barely Texan was similar. As are a number of prominent Democrats I won't mention.
I will say Ted Kennedy was genuinely a warm guy, who not only remembered your name, but what you drank, your wife's name, kids names, and how they were doing in school. Yeah, he was a drunk, but he was a good guy and very smart/committed. Tip O'Neil (showing my age) was similar. I walked past him going to coach and he got up and insisted my wife and baby take his and his place in first class because we had a new baby.

(2,188 posts)Personality/intelligence wise? Hmm. Cruz is pretty damn book-smart, so I won't put him at worst. Santorum would have won this, but he hasn't been a Senator in years.

(3,051 posts)I don't know the new crop very well, if at all.
I saw Cruz argue before the Supreme Court, and he was very funny and engaging while he argued an absurd position. He's a really, really good lawyer. The kind I would hire if I was really in trouble on something. He could disagree without being disagreeable, which is rare among lawyers these days. I have no idea what he is like as a person. Probably pretty arrogant.
Never met Santorum, but I will say he gives me the willies. His staff was rude because I was a Democrat lawyer. Very adversarial, which is stupid, because 90% of the stuff we did is stuff that is almost ministerial and the parties (and people) agree on.
Know nothing about Rand Paul and have never even seen him in person. His father was furtive and kind of quick-moving. Reminded me of Gollum. I think he was horrified that a Jew was talking to him.
Joe Biden is exactly as he appears. Very nice, kind of goofy, but a genuine person. Surprisingly dapper. You know the silver fox guy on Mad Men? That's an exaggerated TV version of Joe Biden.
I will pick on one Democrat: John Kerry. If Ted Kennedy was a 9/10 on the scale of likability, John Kerry was a 1/10. Really a complete entitled asshole. Basically the Democrat version of McCain.

(29,322 posts)Aside from becoming hawkish on Iran right before a GOP primary overall he isn't bad. Disclaimer: Doesn't mean I agree with Rand Paul on every single issue.
Needs & threats, I get tired of "national security". US acts like they are some beaten up victim of big bad bullies.

(29,322 posts)I'm always afraid to say I agree on an issue especially if it is civil liberty related like the Patriot Act or anything similar. Sometimes just simply arguing an anti-NSA viewpoint gets me an accusation of being a Libertarian.

(2,652 posts)BUT only after all diplomatic avenues have been exhausted. bush threw away diplomacy. He only wanted war, period.
The current candidates for the republican ticket all want war. No diplomacy. No peace talks. Nothing else except to help their donors from the MIC.

That's pretty much the highest honor there is in regards to that area.
