Price Tag To Taxpayers At Least $100 Million To Settle Unions' Lawsuit Over Rowland Layoffs

Source: Hartford Courant

April 28, 2015, 5:22 PM

It will cost taxpayers between $100 million and $125 million to settle a 12-year-old lawsuit by coalition of unions against the state on behalf of more than 2,500 unionized workers who were laid off in 2003 by then-Gov. John G. Rowland, General Assembly leaders were told Tuesday afternoon.

State Attorney General George Jepsen went to the state Capitol to brief leaders of the majority Democrats and minority Republicans in the state House and Senate on the complex and unusually structured settlement his office had negotiated with lawyers for the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition (SEBAC) after a federal appeals court panel said in 2013 that Rowland's action had been illegal.

The legislative leaders filed out of a third-floor room in the Capitol after the briefing, saying they had agreed not to discuss the details.

However, informed sources and a 19-page memorandum given to the leaders by Jepsen said that the financial structure of the settlement is intended to diminish its fiscal impact in a time of state budget crisis. The settlement still would have to clear the General Assembly and then be approved by the U.S. District Court.

The man was unbelievable!

He cost the state hundreds of millions of dollard during his corruption filled years, and now he's going off to jail for a couple of years for trying to squeeze out $30K from a candidate.

Yet another republican political shyster who cares more about himself than the people he swore to serve.

I am retired military, on active duty 1967 - 1995.

In the late 1980's, I was in a Pentagon assignment that required me to do a lot of Congressional briefings, mainly responding to Congresscritters who wanted a personal briefing on some matter of interest to them.

I recall briefing John Rowland three or four times. He was a smart-aleck, wise-mouthed, self-important little shit.

I don't make a habit of gloating over other people's misfortune but I'm certain he brought it on himself and he deserves everything he gets.

state roads are terrible, state parks are closed most of the time, the state relies on non-profit conservation orgs to do the work DEEP should be doing, there are only a couple of staff members charged with enforcing rules on all the boats on all the lakes in the state, small towns send their tax $ to Hartford, which redistributes the education $ to cities but the kids still don't have basic skills, yada, yada.

The one thing working well here in CT is the O-care state exchange.

John Rowland cannot keep his nose clean and now this. CT has become a second-class state since this clown was in charge, followed by Jodi Rell, another repug.
