Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders: 'I am running for president'
Source: AP
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Promising to fight what he deems "obscene levels" of income disparity and a campaign finance system that is a "real disgrace," independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday he will run for president as a Democrat.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Sanders confirmed his plans to formally join the race Thursday.
The self-described "democratic socialist" enters the race as a robust liberal alternative to Hillary Rodham Clinton, and he pledged to do more than simply raise progressive issues or nudge the former secretary of state to the left in a campaign in which she is heavily favored.
"People should not underestimate me," Sanders said. "I've run outside of the two-party system, defeating Democrats and Republicans, taking on big-money candidates and, you know, I think the message that has resonated in Vermont is a message that can resonate all over this country."

Good. The more voices we have, the better.
Free advertising for the Democratic Party, its ideas and ideals.
Here's hoping more declare their candidacy.
And in the end, they will all support our Democratic Nominee.

(24,345 posts)I think he will connect with many.
I cannot speak for the south, only having lived there for a short period while I was in the army
I think he will be well received in many areas of the Midwest
Will he be received better than HRC or another person running we'll see

(29,322 posts)The issues he stands on are on issues most Americans support. With stagnating wages & unemployment I imagine many people in the South & Midwest are struggling. Plus, he spent several months in Iowa speaking to people with older elderly coming away genuinely believing that he will follow through on what it is they favor. Most people are being left behind in favor of the corporations, everyone sees it. Its just that Bernie genuinely doesn't flip-flop or obvious pander on issues. Times are changing & we have even more young people that turned 18 since 2012 & 2008 & Obama won for all the reasons that said it couldn't be done, plus he ran on issues that were Progressive not playing the middle except for privatization of education. He was clear on that issue.

I agree with your assessment - Vermont just might be completely different than any of the other 49 states.
I like Bernie Sanders, and think he has a lot to offer to Democrats and the country - as a Senator. The chances of him being elected President are slim and none.
I get slammed when I point out the obvious (as if I'm trying to be derrogatory), but he is a self-admitted Socialist, and he's Jewish. Those two things will turn off ALL republicans (no big deal) but a lot of middle-America Democrats.

(3,795 posts)And I don't think any Democrat will be winning in the deep south in the '16 Presidential race, and I don't think I'd want them to if they had to appeal to the rabid conservatives in that area.
I don't think (at least I hope not) that Hillary will be going after the votes of the hard-core conservatives in the deep south. That wouldn't be a winning national strategy for her.

(41,182 posts)Bernie's truth messages about the declining middle class & rise of Oligarch power will be received by many concerned & struggling Americans, it already has. Yet from what I see of the deep South that may be different. Not only due to the conservatism there but also the corporate media. How much M$M covers him I want to see. In the last few months it has been very good, although many younger people & DU members say they rarely or never watch Television.
To get a real sense of Bernie people should watch/listen to him take calls from Americans all over the country on THOM HARTMANN'S PROGRAM, M-F, 12-3 PM, ET. The segment, "BRUNCH WITH BERNIE" is held on FRIDAYS. Bernie usually speaks to call ins for about an hour, normally 12-1. If his schedule changes, he does the appearance on another weekday airing of Thom's program.
HARTMANN'S daily program can be seen/heard on FSTV (FREE SPEECH TV Channel) carried on Dish and Direct, or LIVE online at freespeech.org, & also on some cable & radio stations in the US.
During the BRUNCH TIME segment, you really get to know Bernie (who has a great sense of humor, btw) & see how he does his very best to assist callers with issues to discuss & concerns from Veterans having difficulty with the medical system, people who can't afford their prescription medicine, those with access to voting issues & more.
Occasionally Bernie refers them to contact his Senate office for more information. That is real dedication.
Sanders has been doing the session for many years; what other politician would devote his time to listening & helping average Americans from every part of the country? His commitment to the welfare of the people & the country is genuine, authentic & exceptional.
~We need Bernie in this presidential campaign to speak out on what is actually happening in this country.~

He is one of only 3 people who I would love to see as president; Sherrod Brown and Elizabeth Warren.

(25,348 posts)In the park, in the dark underneath the moon
Hear a boy and a girl hummin' Bernie's Tune.
Went to sleep countin' sheep by a blue lagoon
Heard a frog on a log croakin' Bernie's Tune.
It's so easy to whistle, It's so easy to sing
Even hummingbirds hum it, it's the thing.
Office clerks, soda jerks whistle Bernie's Tune
Millionaires, even squares whistle Bernie's Tune.
Hark the lark in the park crazy as a loon
In a tree skillfully singing Bernie's Tune.
Little kids go to school singin' Bernie's Tune
Gurglin' brooks, bubblin' pools babble Bernie's Tune.
You don't have to read music, you don't have to be smart
Bernie says you can sing it from the heart.
So if you happen to get the urge to croon
Take a tip, man, get hip, make it Bernie's Tune.

(11,014 posts)will be the right wing chant and they'll scare independents into thinking Bernie is some kind of Stalin.
Obama was a moderate and they painted him as a socialist.
Bernie IS a socialist and it will be an extremely uphill battle.
He is a good man and if he wins the nomination, I'd happily vote for him.
Hope there is a spirited campaign that forces Hillary to the left.

(4,887 posts)she will be forced to make claims, and people will believe her. I cant see her losing.
But, if you remember, President Obama promised 'change' and how many wall
street thieves are in prison? Why the deafening silence on pot legalization
at the federal level? Why not a peep about the for profit prison industry?
I can go on and on. I do hope Hillary loses the nomination to Bernie.
I am seriously troubled by the dlc wing and of the money from wall street.
If I wanted a stinking republican in the white house, I'd vote for 1.
Hillary is NOT a democrat as I see it.

(12,296 posts).... the RW screams "liberal" and "socialist" and we contort ourselves trying to prove we're "just like them" instead of planting our feet and saying "Yeah I'm a liberal. I'm proud of what liberals have done for the working people in this country. So what the fuck is your problem?"
We - and our candidates - have to stop apologizing for what we believe in.

the talk. But can he walk it?
Of course not...as all the moonstruck liberals found out about obama.
Though imho he is the greatest prez this country has ever had.
Unless the dems recapture some majorities (house) bernie won't be able to get
much done either. The hillbillys already consider this country a welfare
state..
But he is a white guy..if he were to get in maybe the countrys current
dive into a domestic terriorist state will fall apart. How can koch possibly
demonize him like he has obama?

(1,560 posts)The country, including the Democratic Party, needs to be moved toward the left on every issue, especially the economic ones where we just keep regressing on inequality and living wages. America can only ignore his words at its own peril.

I'd of never dreamed that the numbers he quotes are that high! And Exxon Mobile! Where do I even begin? I live in Oklahoma and am moving to Colorado, I cannot get out of this state fast enough. I was very happy about Hillary, but I almost died of happiness when I found out that Bernie Sanders is running for President. Here's a link to the video:
