Protesters clash with NYPD, disrupt Holland Tunnel and West Side Highway in bid to support Baltimore
Source: New York Daily News
Protesters jammed Union Square and clashed with NYPD officers as they marched through the streets of New York City in solidarity with Baltimore activists Wednesday night, briefly shutting down the Holland Tunnel and snarling traffic along the West Side Highway - resulting in at least 65 arrests.
What began as a small gathering at Union Square around 6 p.m. swelled to more than 1,000 people, many holding "Justice 4 Freddie Gray" placards while chanting "Black Lives Matter" and continued into the early hours Thursday.
"Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, shut the whole system down!" the crowd shouted and then broke into several smaller protests, moving on to Herald Square, Times Square, Columbus Circle and everywhere in between.
...snip...
Police reported at least 100 people in custody waiting to be processed as of 10:30 p.m., many of them detained along the West Side Highway near the tunnel.

(26,337 posts)most of the people who got trapped in the traffic jam will agree with that.........once they get over being pissed off at the protesters of course.

(29,322 posts)I'm not sure myself these days since police in riot gear "kettle" all the time. Block off an area in formation close it off & the area becomes smaller & smaller until something pops. Peaceful protests eventually become "clashes with NYPD".

NYPD van full of peaceful protesters including @NLGnews legal observer at Union Sq. #BaltimoreUprising solidarity NYC
NYPD officers, many wearing riot helmets and carrying handfuls of plastic cuffs, were seen loading several activists into police vans.
"We walked to West Side Highway and the cops cornered people so people were fighting back," Chris Carmack, 18, a political science major at Hunter who lives in Flatbush, told the Daily News.
He came to the protest with his roommate.
"I got a baton to the temple and my roommate got a baton to the stomach," said Carmack, who claims cops retaliated when a protester hurled a water bottle at them.
From the story in the OP, I don't know all the facts but the cornering people til they fight back is the "kettling" SOP to justify the arbitrary arrests & shut down the protests. People trapped in the traffic jam blame the protestors which is the sort of the response they look for.
This is clearly kettling wherever this -- just an example

(2,841 posts)Get thousands in a large demonstration in Times Square instead of branching out in smaller groups snarling traffic and tunnels. Don't give the media or naysayers or the public room to call it a nuisance.

(787 posts)As a former New Yorker stuck in traffic because some group wants to garner attention to their cause; I can tell you that I support the cops clearing the way. Most people that have ever been stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel feel that way. Are the police always correct? No. But how many acts of heroism and kindness performed by the police never get reported.

A still image can be misleading but I don't under brass being involved and pushed his head forward during an arrest. On edit - the guy in the right on the Yahoo photo seemed a little bit excited judging from the Daily News photo

(1,681 posts)Dunno has a patch on his arm that I don't recognize. However his shield/name plate is gold & not silver like a regular line officer. Some other NY state LE agency I imagine. It's certainly not NY State Police, their patch is different & larger from Dunno's.

(39,171 posts)The Task Forces are organized within each patrol borough and specialize in rapid mobilization for disorder control. The task forces can quickly respond to an incident location and mobilize to a precision suppression force to disperse disorderly groups and provide perimeter security. The task forces also assist other units in a variety of different elements such as in wide area searches for missing persons, DWI vehicle checkpoints, and supplemental patrol in high crime areas.
