North Carolina Senate overrides governor's veto of marriage opt-out bill

Source: Yahoo! News / Reuters

RALEIGH, N.C. (Reuters) - A measure that would allow some public officials in North Carolina to opt out of performing gay marriages moved closer to becoming law on Monday, when lawmakers voted to override Republican Governor Pat McCrory’s veto of the bill.

The Republican-led state Senate reached the three-fifths majority needed to override McCrory’s veto in a 32-16 vote. The legislation now goes back to the Republican-controlled state House of Representatives, which passed it in February by a margin wide enough to override the veto.

The bill allows magistrates and other officials to refuse to perform marriages or issue marriage certificates by citing a “sincerely held religious objection.” Once they have asked to opt out in writing, magistrates would be barred from performing any marriage, gay or heterosexual, for six months.

Senate leader Phil Berger said the bill struck a balance between the legal ruling that allowed same-sex marriages to begin in the state last year and the rights of state employees to exercise their religion.

what they are doing to educations and the quality of life is criminal. My sister wants me to move there, but I say NJ is number one as the most livable state! hopefully Christie will leave us some state to be proud of unless say Exxon wants some more of it.

Tonight we are going to a political fundraiser for Dem Roy Cooper who is running
for Governor. http://www.roycooper.com/

But, we have to contend with gerrymandered districts (thanks to Repubs) to change
the numbers of these Repub idiots and a$$holes in the State legislature.

Him in the next election. The legislature is safe in gerrymandered districts and massive amounts of Art Pope's money.

the courts have made it easier for businesses to discriminate against gays and women. Thanks Roberts Court for your ever loving coporate personhood myth you brought to the laws we have to abide by.
