Lion mauls American tourist to death in South African game park

Source: The Guardian

An American woman has been mauled to death by a lion that leaped through an open car window at a game park in South Africa, an official has said.

A man who was driving the car was reportedly injured when he tried to fight off the lion. The tourists have not been named.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, which was witnessed by other visitors to the park.

...

Visitors to the park are given numerous warnings not to leave their windows open, Simpson said. “We make it so clear. We put signage up everywhere that people must keep their windows closed. We hand them a slip of paper when they enter the park; I really don’t understand why people think its OK to leave windows open."

In a wild animal park, you should expect there are wild animals. I suspect they were on their own and not with a licensed guide who would nix open windows. When I was in Kruger National Park some twenty years ago two Japanese tourists were eaten alive when they got out of the car and stood in front of feeding lions to take a selfie. Tragic.

but that's what it was. They set up a camera on a tripod and stood with their backs to the feeding lions, offering themselves up as dessert. Not too bright!

It's not a reserve in the classic sense. More halfway between reserve and zoo. The lions have all been reared around humans and live in a series of large outdoor enclosures with room to roam. You can take a park bus through the enclosures or drive your own car through. You can drive right up to the lions because they just lie around at the side of the dirt track and ignore most visitors. I sat in a mini with two majestic young males only a meter away, belly up in the sun. There are plenty of warnings about windows and doors, but as far as I'm concerned you have to be an idiot, or maybe just really, really, clueless about wild animals, not to know without having to be warned, or worse, just ignoring the warning.

I visit National Parks and occasionally chat with a ranger....some of the things they get asked....

Yellowstone: What time do they let the animals out?

Personally witnessed in Yellowstone: People getting very close to the Bison....because they thought they were docile as cows.

Yosemite: They need to put a McDonalds here (Mariposa Grove)

Seeing people feed the squirrels on top of Nevada Falls.

Joshua Tree - saw a senior citizen couple trying to feed a coyote to get it to come close to their car.

Zions: People feeding squirrels right in front of signs placed everywhere to NOT feed the squirrels.
