House points toward Friday trade vote; prospects uncertain

Source: AP

By CHARLES BABINGTON and ERICA WERNER

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican leaders pushed toward a House vote Friday on landmark trade legislation, a top second-term priority for President Barack Obama, even as they scrambled to lock down the necessary votes.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy informed lawmakers of the likely timing during a closed-door meeting Wednesday. Rank-and-file members emerging from the session said the leadership is not claiming that it has the votes for passage — at least not yet.

"I don't think they're there yet," said Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., who is undecided and talking frequently with House vote-counters.

Amodei said the leadership needs 195 Republicans and figures they won't get more than 20 or 25 Democrats.

This will be what the Obama administration is remembered for, pushing agreements that Republicans want more than they want to stop the ACA. Or at least as much. Including denial of abortion to sex traffic victims and currency manipulation.

Or "the fix is in"?

Late Tuesday, House Republicans cleared the way for a vote, while also making a concession that points to the need for more Democratic votes. The Rules Committee removed a provision, strongly opposed by most Democrats, that would have funded a job-training program with cuts in Medicare spending. Instead, the program will be paid for with higher penalties and tougher enforcement of tax violations involving some businesses and higher education tax credits.

The changes were made after a private meeting between Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Boehner strongly supports the trade bill, while Pelosi has been noncommittal.

as its been shown when its something corporations want (and most corporations want this) they will vote yes to it even if they know its something that will hurt the american people.

and with the mumble jumble support or non support Hillary has shown I think there is a good chance she could lose the nomination,
Liberals are pissed and unions will have a voice it just wont be Hillary.

I'm curious which Republican candidate Republican Obama will endorse

Obama will twist enough dems to help pass.

trade deals favor corporations and hurt working people.

Labor should refuse any support for any dems who support free trade deals.Like many unions were screwed over by obama.

If supreme court guts the conservative leaning ACA exactly what have we gotten from obama?

I am so done with him.i don't care what he says.he might as well switch over to republican and stop pretending to be a democrat.
Same as Hillary.

When Obama started his first term and appointed so many Republicans to his cabinet I wondered WTF is going on here.
Then when he had former Goldman Sash's patriots running the treasury it was obvious that he was not a Democrat but why wouldn't a progressive challenge this guy in 2012
We were fooled twice and now it looks as if he will get a sizable contribution for his Library from the Koch Bros and other Billionaires.

many thought in 2012 he was only thing keeping total right wing control of country.few thought we would be right back In iraq as
before.if dems knew he would attack attack real liberals like elizabeth warren and push TPP like a republican do you think they still would have supported him? I think not.would things really be that different if romeny was In White house.I think not.

Obama doesn't care about young black men being killed or NSA voilting our civil rights.

It's really the courts they are causing the victorys for Marriage equality.

Even the ACA is more conservative idea.

And i supported him over hillary and donated money to his re-election so i am defently not just a hater.

11. When the ACA care act first came about it was a great plan

it was more like a single payer plan and then...The insurance companies went to work spending millions, I mean millions to defeat this legislation. So what we ended up with was a plan that the insurance companies approved of because it actually put larger profits into their accounts.
Remember what mostly all Democrats said when they voted and passed Obama Care.."Its a start and we will improve it beginning immediately". Nothing ever happen...For Obama it gave him bragging rights and you are correct it is more of a conservative movement because if it wasn't, insurance companies would have killed the legislation.
The Republicans wanting to kill the ACA is just a ploy that makes for great Theater for the Tea Baggers

When this TPP passes I want to hear what Elizabeth Warren has to say about this and I want to see how Hillary reacts when it passes.
I'm betting Hillary will find some off the cuff reason to praise the agreement.

while it has improvements the ACA is plan that favors insurance companys.

The tea party really thinks obama is devil and anything he wants is bad.that is why GOP needs dem votes to pass TPP In house.

fight over "Obamacare" is theatre.i think the supreme court won't gut it because it might hurt insurance companys if they do.

Elizabeth warren will be critcal of tpp when it passes.she is one of true democrats.Hillary will find way to praise it.she will use
the term "Bi-partisan" as part of her prasing. The clintons almost always never see a trade deal they didn't like.yeah she voted against CAFTA but she has to be seen as against it since bush was pushing it.
