Obama Authorizes Deploying Up To 450 More Troops To Iraq

Source: NPR

President Obama has authorized the Pentagon to send up to 450 additional troops to Iraq in an effort to beef up the training of local security forces in their fight against the so-called Islamic State.

In a statement, Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the military personnel will "train, advise, and assist Iraqi Security Forces at Taqaddum military base in eastern Anbar province."

He added: "The President made this decision after a request from Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi and upon the recommendation of Secretary Carter and Chairman Dempsey, and with the unanimous support of his national security team."

The U.S. already has 3,100 troops in the country. They're deployed at four established training sites. The additional troops will be deployed to Anbar Province, an area just west of Baghdad that is reportedly now under Islamic State control.

how many years did we train iraqi forces and for what?

Another step to full back to iraq as neocons want.Obama is so gutless he is doing what they want.

More evidance i and others were idiots to support him over hillary.

Only hope to pull away from this direction is Bernie Sanders.no difference at all between corporate Dems like hillary and republicans
on this.

When the social safety net is cut to help pay for it.don't cry to me.

Iraq isn't worth one american life or one cent of american taxpayer money.

You know partly why i am done with Obama.

is not what I want.

I want a different direction, new set of ideas, jobs needed in the United States, infrastructure needs to be rebuilt - my city has potholes the size of a large beachballs all over, and no money to pay for a full repaving, and most of the time, the patches gets washed off with the recent amount of crazy rains we've had lately. I want a politician that understands domestic spending is now a higher priority then doing another military misadventures... Rebuild the infrastructure, and maintain it, and you create permanent jobs. Upgrade the railroads to be high speed. Make them highly competitive with the airlines. Europe and Japan has shown the future, it's now time to embrace it. I won't even mention wind and solar energy industries because they also create tons of jobs.

I am tired of this BS.as you said united states infrastructure needs to be rebult.

If i wanted to go with corporists and neo-cons i would vote republican. That's why I am supporting bernie sanders.

Those like hillary thought it was such a great idea to give bush the authority helped create this mess.that alone should disqualife her
for president.

I don't have no fancy degree but i knew back in 2002 going to war in iraq was bad idea.

Its that she, along with other Corporate Dems, fought against Progressives. Time and time again Corporate Dems will side with Repugs, like TPP & Bush Tax Cuts for the rich, and villify "the left". I sincerely believe that Corporate Dems work to make sure real Leftists dont gain serious power in the party or office. They hate us, and like FDR, I welcome their hatred.

Bernie spoke about the Middle East yesterday on NPR on that radio show.
http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2015-06-10/the-2016-presidential-race-a-conversation-with-democratic-candidate-and-vermont-senator-bernie-sanders

I liked how clear he was:

"What is taking place now is a war for the soul of Islam. Saudi Arabia, it turns out, has the third-largest military budget in the world. You got Turkey there, you got Jordan there, you got the UAE there. You have -- countries are going to have to step up to the plate and lead the effort with the support of the United States and other Western countries. But here is my nightmare, and I see it moving forward every day. You've got a lot of Republicans there who apparently did not learn anything from the never-ending war in Afghanistan, learned nothing from what happened in Iraq and want us in a perpetual warfare in the Middle East."

"I don't have a magic solution. I'm not sure anybody does. But what has to happen is the Muslim countries in that area, there has got to be a strong coalition. They're going to have to get their hands dirty. They can't sit aside and wait for the United States of America, our soldiers, our taxpayers, to carry the ball for them. They're going to have to lead the effort."

not that most people here care - as Ive seen over the last 12 years. but in case someone who does value us stumbles on this.

Ive offered my experience and thoughts on this before but usually got it censored by people here because it wasnt popular.

here's a hint. If either party really started backing veterans - and I think Bernie would actually be in my corner - they would dominate ever election on every level for the next 2 decades.

On a different note why should Snowden get clemency without a trial? You remember PFC Manning? That kid is a hero to this war veteran. Did the right thing, but broke the law. Didnt run from the consequences. Didnt continue to dangle more 'secrets' (hey I thought you were about freedom and democracy and not keeping 'threats to democracy' in your back pocket for your personal gain.

Obama either supports the neocon/MIC idea of continuous war or he is powerless to stop it.

Noticed you totally avoided calling "PFC Manning" a she. Interesting.

And did Snowden do the wrong thing by avoiding being tortured and imprisoned for life? Easy to say no. Snowden isn't any less of a hero because he tried to avoid the wrath of the NSA/CIA Black Security State.

The treatment of whistle-blowers is an issue where we can see the difference between progressives and conservatives. Guess which wants him tortured and "broken"?

Today's dems at least those that get elected to white house are spineless. The president makes decsions.not military.the excuse i keep hearing is i just follow recommandations of military leaders.

In early 1960's kennedy didn't just do what military wanted.if he had the world would have been blown up In october 1962 over cuba.
They didn't think he went far enough In vietnam.

Problem with clintons and obama is they just go along with war plans.

Does anyone actully read anymore? This is early 1960's all over again with "Advisors"

I don't have no fancy degree but i can reality here just like i knew it was bad idea in 2002 to go into iraq.

we spent how many years training and funding iraqi army and for what?

I'm sick of this crap.

Rep. James McGovern from Massachusetts just gave the republicans a what if and lack of spine that this current Majority right wing Congress about this troop deployment that Obama is putting in place and the other items that he has been doing and what he asked Congress to do 10 months ago from this worthless John Boehner ( Speaker---drunk) , Kevin McCarthy----- (Spineless chicken hawk majority leader).

McGovern basically said this country is spending 3.5 million an HOUR in Iraq today (84 million in a twenty-four hour period) and in the scheme of priorities from the republicans today ( 6-10-15) ---------------they want to gut the requirement to not tell us where we get our food from and what they do to the food in foreign countries before they ship it to us for consummation----------(so this labeling bill from your right wing spineless rep from Yakima for all of you Washingtonites out there on the west coast) is more important than taking a up or down vote on authorizing your / our citizens to fight in a civil war and die in Iraq that this right wing Congress doesn't want to vote on-------------you just can't make this stuff up.

U.S citizens are being put in harms way and this majority of right wing hypocrites doesn't --hasn't even brought this up------------it is there Constitutional responsibility-----------this is totally outrageous your either for this crap or your against it -----------vote on it go on the public record-----------that's you job description

Rep McGovern got it right

... Iraq, but he did.

DU common wisdom also had him invading Egypt, Syria, Libya, and Iran at various times too.

Never happened.

What surprises me is that some DU members continue to act as if their failed dire predictions on such things actually came true.

Thus giving them a manufactured reason to expect Obama to reinvade Iraq once again.

I probably shouldn't be surprised.

Libya: it's not a war if Americans can't get hurt

Exclusive: Marines Who Rescued Downed Pilots in Libya Feared Hostile Fire

The United States Marine Corps captains who rescued two U.S. Air Force pilots in Libya said today they feared hostile fire during the rescue mission but describe an otherwise smooth operation that lasted about an hour and a half.

"After it was all over we felt very good," said USMC Capt. Erik "Brillo" Kolle. "Getting a guy out like that and have everything go the way it was supposed to is very satisfying. It was personally very satisfying."

The two rescued pilots had ejected from their U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle after an equipment malfunction caused their plane to crash 25 miles east of Benghazi, Libya, Monday night.

The F-15 had dropped its bombs just before the mechanical problems occurred, and the pilots ejected at 22,000 feet. The F-15 pilots have not yet been identified by the Air Force.

Kolle and USMC Capt. Joe "Angry" Andrejack were part of a team of fighter jets, helicopters and two Ospreys -- which can land and take off like a helicopter -- that flew into eastern Libya to rescue the downed pilots. For both, it was their first time conducting a rescue operation.

NAPLES, Italy — The United States is considering establishing additional military bases in Iraq to combat the Islamic State, the top American general said on Thursday, a move that would require at least hundreds more American military advisers to help Iraqi forces retake cities lost to the militant Sunni extremist group.

President Obama’s decision this week to send 450 trainers to establish a new military base to help Iraqi forces retake the city of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar Province, could signal the beginning of similar efforts in other parts of the country, said Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
