Charleston shooting suspect Dylann Roof captured

Source: MSNBC

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Police have captured a suspected gunman believed to have fatally shot nine church members gathered Wednesday night for Bible study and prayer, officials said Thursday. Dylann Storm Roof, 21, was taken into custody in Shelby, North Carolina, nearly 250 miles from the scene of the deadly shooting.

Among the dead in the massacre at one of the nation’s oldest black churches here was beloved pastor Clementa Pinckney, a longtime state senator.

Local, state and national law enforcement had launched a massive manhunt for Roof. The Justice Department announced it has opened a hate crime investigation into the shooting. President Obama is expected to address the shooting Thursday morning.

Calling the shooting “heartbreaking and deeply tragic,” U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody.

I'm not surprised - every day that I watch our President being so disrespected - to almost an abnormally hideous extent. And it just never seems to end. Hell, I've SEEN the little kids at the teabagger rallies, who see their moms and dads and uncles and aunts walking around with the stars 'n' bars either flying from their hats or stitched onto their jeans or emblazoned on their t-shirts, and their poorly-spelled posters with the President's image displayed in a derogatory fashion. I've seen the little kids who are brought to these rallies with their parents and/or other family members.

As my late great mother-in-law used to say - "they don't suck it outta their thumbs."

President Obama should have made an enormous example of him right then and there. He should have stopped the speech, forced Wilson to come up to the podium and slapped him across the face with an open hand for the disrespect to the office of the President of the United States. He then should have kicked the ever-loving shit out of the son of a bitch and embarassed him in front of the entire nation.

I know I will never be President for a ton of reasons, but if I had been giving a solemn and respected speech to the nation and been interrupted like that by such a no account weasel of a representative, it would have been open season on his ass for the remainder of the session. After EVERY applause line, I would have taken a dramatic pause and retorted, "Was THAT a lie too Joe?". After every proposal or program discussed, "Was THAT a lie too Joe?".

I thought that egregious breech of etiquette was unforgivable. Apparently the voters of that district in South Carolina still believe otherwise...

Especially since I had spent 8 years being bitched at for my rants against Bush as a moronic murderer, with people telling me I should respect the office if not the man.

Wilson is, to my great regret and shame, my Congressman. I'm not sure looking back that his outburst wasn't planned in advance. He was facing a very tough fight (while his district is considered safe, Democrats usually get 43-47% of the vote) against a moderate, white Iraq war vet. Wilson became an instant Tea Party hero and raised a ton of money with his shameful act. He won with about 55% and hasn't faced a serious Dem challenger since.

And then they will receive the satisfaction of him languishing in prison for a very, very, very long time.

And since he's alive, it is easier to track his network of contacts that radicalized him, allowing investigation into those people and prevent a future mass shooting.

Instead, you want to give the shooter the easy way out.

As long as guns are so easily available, as long as that stars-n-bars culture persists, as long as that bagger mentality and the nutcase mentality remains in place - longing for the "good ol' days" of the mid 1800s, and coddled, and given cover and excused away (because they have "rights", too!), as long as there are those who CLING to the bad old days and yearn to resurrect them and reestablish them and validate them and rationalize how worthy they are to be kept current, nothing will be learned, and nothing will change.

They could start by taking that DAMN flag down from the South Carolina state capitol building. And stop being so damn proud of it.

98. Hate Map
Thu Jun 18, 2015, 05:26 PM
Jun 2015

Look at the hate map for the Southern Poverty Law Center for South Carolina and surrounding states. This kid is not alone. Many families have had a continual regeneration of racism and hate for a long long time. It has always been there. Now it is all out and upfront with Obama, and well armed. This has divided my own family. It is scary when a family member marries into a group of yahoos and then is terrorized by them and raises his children with the fear and bigotry and hate.
It is shocking. This is contagious and multi-generational.

There must be a great deal of money in funding hate and devisiveness as it has always been in our nation's history.
They use it over and over again as Karl Rove and Lee Atwater taught. Jesse Helm before that. It has always been there.
It must be productive for the conservative forces. So on it goes.
THIS ONE is NOT going to go away.

And it happened the night before Jeb was supposed to speak? Who trained this kid? Who's drone is he? I want to see the forensics on him. I want to see the profile. Not CNN blather. If he has a military background as Mark David Chapman had then we might deduct funny business could be afoot? These kids do not come from nothing. The male adolescent mine is easily co-opted, exploited and weaponized.

Jade Helm has the hate groups stirred up. Look at Neo Nazi web sites. Look at the research of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Look around you where you live. Look into your families. They are there. They are in the police departments and the military. We need to a better job of reporting this issue and educating everyone. Sadly, for me, I am not surprised. It is as heart breaking as when Malcolm was murdered and Dr. King was murdered.

If we are truly sick of this WE have to change it. My suggestion is a nation wide strike, complete economic boycott, until something REAL is done about it. We need to go Gandhi on them. As Samuel Jackson once said "this is not done behind computer screens. It is done in the streets" so it cannot be ignored or spun or co-opted. It must be economically disruptive to a degree it cannot be trivialized. It must be BIG. Again.

I just can't even imagine what that's like. Not to feel safe even in church?!?!?!?!?

That just turns so much upside-down. I mean - even just the basic "church-as-sanctuary" theme. You go to church to pray and feel closer to God and more focused on other things than just the hustle-bustle of the current secular (even unholy) day. People seek sanctuary in church. Political sanctuary. Emotional sanctuary. Moral sanctuary. Mental sanctuary. Spiritual sanctuary. SANCTUARY. You're not supposed to feel dread - or vulnerability - in church. You're supposed to feel the comfort and safety of being under God's Wing - Whatever or Whoever your vision of God is.

It's an outrage. An abomination. A sin.

I believe the Jewish people call it sitting shiva. Don't know how new you are but perhaps you've gotten a whiff or two of the bickering that's gone on here over the choice of Democratic presidential candidates. And that's kinda been a low point for us as a collective. We do get into it, though.

HOWEVER, you'll find, too, that in crisis times like this one, the solidarity and fellowship and sympathy and empathy and deep care and affection for each other - all that is very much in evidence, too. We DO (we DU) come together and stand shoulder-to-shoulder and comfort one another. At horrifying and bewildering times like this one, we're at our best.

and quickness of the police to respond to the tip.

Very excellent work by the police, I gotta say.

For those not accustomed to the South, attacks against black churches is a HUGE deal down here, and a Federal crime.

Looking forward to learning what that kid's background is, but I ascribe part of the problem to the Reich Wing of the Republican party and to Fox news.

sounds like the little shit thought he would run off into the sunset and live a free life. This is one small sliver of glee one can receive from this situation; he probably thought he wouldn't be caught - and I hope that's the case because what a rug to have pulled out from under you!

Even as deranged mass shootings go, this one is bizarre

-why pray with a group for an hour before shooting?
-how do we reconcile the confederate flag on his car and apartheid era South African flag patch on his jacket (on facebook) with the number of black friends on his facebook page?
-why flee immediately to North Carolina?

44. Maybe he's crazy??

It's obvious that he's morally deranged, but maybe he's insane-deranged. Maybe we will not even find out during the justice process.

While it doesn't bring the dead back, it is wonderful that they caught him so that we don't have to wonder where he will strike next. This crime combined the deeply bizarre with the utterly horrific.

Given the very symbolic location, it seems like a crime of terror against blacks and specifically against the civil rights tradition.

But sitting through the prayer meeting?? Does that make any sense? And the witness who said he commented about rape - well, most of those he shot were women!! Does THAT make any sense? You don't go hunting for rapists in churches!!! Given the "taking over" part of his statement to the witness, one might suspect that he was targeting the senator - but then again, why shoot the others?

This is beyond shocking.

get a general pass, maybe even be judged psychologically insane by using the old he's crazy ploy. My question is how did he get so racistly, hatefully deranged. His father gave him the gun a couple of months ago for his birthday...could there be a connection?

51. Fleeing to North Carolina may be as simple as the road system
Thu Jun 18, 2015, 01:05 PM
Jun 2015

If he'd jumped on I-26 and took it to Spartanburg, then took I-85, that gets him almost to Shelby, NC in less than four hours. He may have realized he had been spotted and taken the little side road from I-85 up to Shelby. I wouldn't be surprised if he has friends in North Carolina, his family used to go there for vacation, or he has some other connection to that area.

That along with his (purported) "raping our women" statement ... I'm guessing he lost a/some woman/women to some Black guy(s).

believe that Gov. in this CNN piece. What bullshit when they fly the confederate flag outside her office every day and as she has said, to hell with the offensive nature of that symbol of racist hate, keep it flying. Trying to sound like she's sad. Take that flag down and maybe, just maybe you can be believed. What bullshit!

and burn it in front of their racist eyes. Of course I'd be jailed or even get prison time for desecrating a sacred symbol of S.C. I won't go to jail for something, that would only be symbolic and without substance. But I would like to burn it...

81. The people who loaded this kid's gun
Thu Jun 18, 2015, 02:27 PM
Jun 2015

ought to take a very long time to search their souls and ask themselves are these victims what they wanted as they filled this kids mind with hate and handed him a gun? A lot of people had a hand in this tragedy.

Are they any different than people halfway around the world chopping off heads and burning people alive because they're different? Sadly, no...

No doubt each and very one of these self-righteous haters would be expecting Seal Team 6 to rescue them if they were about to be on the receiving end of such blind hatred.

The hubris is simply appalling.
