Jewish Extremists Blamed For Setting On Fire A Famous Catholic Church In Israel

A fire ripped through one of the most famous Catholic churches in the Holy Land on Thursday, damaging the roof and burning prayer books in what authorities believe is an attack by Jewish extremists.
The fire broke out at the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish in the middle of the night, causing extensive damage to the inside and outside of the building, said Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.
The modern building is built on the remains of a fifth-century Byzantine church and features a Byzantine mosaic floor that was not harmed. The church marks the traditional spot of Jesus miracle of the loaves and fish, and is located on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. It is one of the most popular stops for Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.
Father Gregory Collins, head of the Order of Saint Benedict in Israel, which maintains the site, said more than 5,000 people visit the church daily. He said the church would be closed for the next three days due to the fire damage.

(57,936 posts)that extremists or this religion or that religion but AGAINST ALL RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE.
I will start by saying that I oppose all religious intolerance as long as the religion is not harming anyone or being intolerant of nay other religion.
It isn't OK to oppress Christians in Israel, or Jews in Palestine or Christians in Egypt or any people or religious institutions anywhere.

(57,936 posts)stand corrected. My post is about religious intolerance.
Nothing wrong with your posting your opinion. But I want to explain what my focus is in my post.
Palestinians and Jewish people should be tolerant of each other's religions. That is my point. Goes both ways.
sulphurdunn
(6,891 posts)to persecute Jews in Palestine for their religious beliefs. I agree, but If your reference to Palestine means the occupied territory of the West Bank, most of the religious hatred there is directed by Israeli religious fanatics, euphemistically called settlers, against Palestinians with the acquiescence of the IDF.

(3,384 posts)And to clarify, it is religions that need to be more tolerant of not only other religions, but of everyone ELSE on the planet who do not agree with them. Religions seem to have a very difficult time at that.

(57,936 posts)Across the world, people are intolerant of other people and especially of people of other religions.
The Israelis I have met (an I have to admit my sample is small) were not intolerant of Muslims and Christians in Israel. So I don't know about other Israelis. According to this article there are extremist groups in Israel that are intolerant even of Christians.
The Muslims do not want Israelis at the Temple Mount. The Israelis do not want Muslims in certain other places.
The key to ending these to me ridiculous disputes over things we cannot know for sure -- religious things -- is to make the struggle not about this group or that group or this religion or that religion -- but about tolerance.
We all need tolerance from others. Fighting for a world that is tolerant of diversity, differences, race, gender, religion, nationality, ethnicity, etc. is the way we can live in peace.
We need to focus on what is common to all of us, the concerns that cause us all pain, like being shut out or persecuted because of our religious beliefs.
We need religious tolerance all the way around.
On edit, you are so right on this:
"And to clarify, it is religions that need to be more tolerant of not only other religions, but of everyone ELSE on the planet who do not agree with them. Religions seem to have a very difficult time at that."
