A "Take Down the Flag" rally is planned for Columbia, South Carolina Saturday evening in the wake of the massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, according to a Facebook post.
Protesters plan to meet in the capital to call for "legislative changes" to remove the Confederate Flag from South Carolina's state house grounds, according to the rally's Facebook page, which had over 4,200 likes as of Saturday afternoon.
"Silence equals violence," a post on the Facebook page said. "Now is the time to do the right thing by speaking out and demanding that our State House Grounds be free of symbols of racial violence and injustice." .......

(41,874 posts)State Police standing guard around the flag pole. I think this is a good opportunity. You have a large crowd, pull that thing down, and burn it! Replace it with The Flag of The United States of America. (Or the flag of major league baseball... as long as its taken down!!)

Another look at the #TakeItDown rally in Columbia, SC. Around 2,000 here, I'd say.

(9,148 posts)Aljazera Weekend News just had a segment & interviewed protestors gathering for the rally.
The movement is not going away.
Appears young Mr Storm Roof's plan to start a race war may just backfire. He may get the opposite of what he asked for.
I would like to see his face when he is told that his actions resulted in the removal of his beloved racist Confederate Flag from atop its tower.
And all his racist supporters of such hate.

(212 posts)I was going to sit on my front porch and play gut wrenching black gospel music. Seemed like common sense this week. Common sense. But now Mahalia is being drowned out by helicopters looking for a cop killer. More Mahalia? Yes. Please!

(15,486 posts)As has been shown many times before, the "powers that be" in the states only listen to the crinkle of greenbacks (US dollars - not Confederate wallpaper.)
If everyone stops doing any business in SC that state will quickly and voluntarily pull down those scraps of filthy cloth.

(1,571 posts)Never allow any public figure to paper over the real meaning behind the flag. Never allow any public display without an accompanying annotation of its true meaning and the undeniable attribution it betows upon those who intentionally display it. Require any reporting on events supporting it to be followed by a recitation of its true meaning and what celebrating its "heritage" says about its defenders. Never let it in your house, in your store. Never trade with those who fly it. Do not speak to those who wear it. Create a slavery flag education day and march against historical ignorance. The flag will eventually die of embarassment.
