Obama, in podcast, uses N-word to make point on racism

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday ignited a storm of social media debate when he used a racial epithet in an interview posted online that discussed race relations following the recent killings of nine black churchgoers.
"It's not just a matter of it not being polite to say 'nigger' in public. That's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of overt discrimination," Obama, the first black U.S. president, told Mark Maron, host of the "WTF" podcast, in an hour-long chat.
The word has a long U.S. history and is almost never used in public remarks, particularly by politicians, and Obama's use of it comes amid a fresh round of soul-searching by many Americans over the country's long struggle with racism.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest, at a daily briefing with reporters on Monday, said Obama intended to be provocative by using the word and to illustrate a larger point.

(498 posts)This is something I learned a long time ago in grade school.
There was a black girl my age there and I overheard her talking to a friend and she used the "n word." Being a curious child who didn't know anything about race except the n word was bad.. and it referred to black people... and you just didn't say that word. I asked her why she used it.
Well, that landed me in the principal's office.
White people aren't allowed to ever use the "n" word in public but black people own it.. I guess you could say. It's theirs to do with as they please.
LOL I think the rethugs are feeling what I was curious about so many years ago.. why can't white people say it but black people can...
I understand why (didn't take me long to learn) but the republicans still haven't figured it out.

(62,287 posts)I wish you were, Obama. I wish you were. You got a shitty fucking hand dealt, took two fucking terms to barely fix it, and now term limits hit and you can't come out with the gloves off now that things have settled.
I hope history remembers Obama for this. I think it's why Obama is pushing TPP. He wants to prove he knows what the fuck he was doing. I hope TPP works for Obama's sake.
Most belittled, derided, insulted, cut down, hated President by the left and right respectively. Moore said he'd only be notable for being black. The right wing thinks he's the worst President there ever was. It truly breaks my heart that this utterly eloquent philosopher has to deal with this crap.

I listened to it yesterday.
Much of it revolved around how much of governing is like middle management - there are so many moving pieces and details that people never think about.
Most people are only going to hear about the n-word being uttered. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it does help further the conversation about race relations in America.
I would vote for Obama again - and again if I could. There are areas where I disagree with him, but overall I have to give him a big thumbs up for governing well during a very difficult period in our nation's history.
He makes me proud of my country, as corny as that sounds. In the face of so much adversity, he rises above the pettiness. His is an uniquely American story.

(6,665 posts)Using it would be to call out to someone and refer to them by the word. Using it implies either a sense of contempt or solidarity, depending on who uses it and how they use it.
He was talking about the word. In print such instances are either in quotes or italics to show that the word is not being used in its common sense.
I use the term "n word" when discussing it because I know people find it offensive, regardless of the intent. I think Obama is taking a good approach, but I think it will be a long time before discussing the word by actually speaking the word will be acceptable for most people.
