Skinny Jeans Can Lead to Nerve and Muscle Damage, Doctors Say
Source: ABC News
The doctors from the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide, Australia said as the woman walked home her legs were so numb that at one point she tripped and fell and was unable to get up for hours until help arrived. At the hospital, doctors had to cut the jeans off because they were so tight and found that she had severe weakness in her ankles because her leg nerves had been damaged.
Doctors were surprised to find that squatting in the tight jeans had lead to compartment syndrome, a dangerous condition where an injury leads to swelling of the muscle or nerves that is constrained by a layer of tissue called the fascia. As the swelling continues the fascia is unable to expand and eventually the muscle and nerves can be injured as blood flow is cut off.
Dr. Roy Buchinsky, Director of Wellness at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, said people should be aware of the red flags of numbness and tingling, which signal pressure is already building in the limb.
Once the leg starts to swell, the train has left the station, said Buchinsky. Thats the sign the muscles are really going to be inflamed and the pressure is way too much.

(14,337 posts)lol Just about ALL of those skinny jeans, and just plain jeans, have a percentage of lycra. At my size I wished they didn't since they stretch out and I end up constantly pulling them up. Was this Australian woman buying American Skinny Jeans???? lol
Leggings, Jeggings. Common factor is that they all stretch.

(5,927 posts)where on DU I am reminded that 'hipsters' is now a bad word.
I know, I know: who gives a shit about that. So ignore me if you don't want to hear it; and please don't take it personal.
But in my day being a hipster was a good thing and it will always bug me, somehow, that it now represents 'phony', or in this case, stupid.
Jack Kerouac is spinning in his grave.
A lot of people managed to make 'liberal' a bad word too. I also fought against that. Why? I guess maybe words matter. Who decided that hipster is a bad word? I don't grok that at all.
Oh well, I guess my 2 cents aren't worth much on this subject. I'm leaving now.

(5,927 posts)I know it's a clothing store (isn't it?) like you would see in a mall. I assume it's associated with phonies then? I doubt it would be my cup of tea, but thanks just the same.
I find really good stuff at the second-hand store. Highly recommended. Sure wish I could buy jeans made in America though....

(14,337 posts)NOTHING is too tight on me. Well, maybe if I shopped in the Children's Department. That would be very embarrassing going in the Fitting Room. No, this is isn't for my Granddaughter but ME. Too humiliating.
Ah, us "little people" are the forgotten segment of American society and the garment industry. Unless you have lived this, you have no idea. Better to wear dresses that you don't have to constantly be pulling up or letting your underwear show.
