Trump Surges in Popularity in N.H., Taking Second Place in Suffolk Poll
Source: Wall Street Journal
Hes dismissed by the political professionals, but there is no denying that the appetite for Donald Trump among Republican primary voters is real.
The New York developer and reality television star is second among 2016 presidential candidates in a new Suffolk University poll of New Hampshire Republicans behind only former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
The poll of 500 likely GOP presidential primary voters found 14% back Mr. Bush. Mr. Trump is right behind at 11%. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio come next, with 8% and 7%, respectively. The poll tested 19 GOP candidates a rare survey that included ultra-longshots like Mark Everson and former Govs. Bob Ehrlich and Jim Gilmore.
While Mr. Trump is experiencing a bump in popularity after announcing the launch of his campaign last week (he filed formal Federal Elections Commission paperwork Monday), he remains the most disliked GOP candidate in the field. Suffolk found he is the only GOP candidate with a net unfavorable rating in New Hampshire 37% of those surveyed had a favorable opinion of Mr. Trump, compared to 49% who had an unfavorable view.

(101,414 posts)So what? 48% of Republican voters view him unfavourably. There are 27% pure idiots in the average American poll, and nearly all of them are Republicans. 11% of Republicans is nothing.
Hey, the link to Trump has been remarked on before:
Readers may recall a certain Senate race in 2004 when a skinny guy with a funny name went up against a handsome guy with a boring name. It promised to be a showdown: two young, attractive, well-educated, personally appealing candidates from the political centers of their respective parties in a high-profile election.
Then there was a thing about Jack Ryans divorce, and he disappeared. The Illinois GOP, having seen their most promising candidate in years go up in a poof of sex club*, needed a replacement. They went through their perpetual-candidate Rolodex, and sure enough, Alan Keyes was available, the Todd Collins of political candidates. The race was immediately over. In the debates, all Obama had to do wait for Keyes to get started on abortion or the constitution and kick back as everything went all cable-access.
But Keyes got 27 percent of the vote. He wasnt from Illinois; had spent the better part of the decade as the electoral equivalent of the Washington Generals; and regularly said things that were either crazy or surprising to hear in the realm of generalized American political discourse depending on how charitable you feel. And still got 27 percent of the vote.
This led screenwriter John Rodgers and a friend to coin the term Crazification Factoran unpredictable and shifting yet relatively consistent bottom, like the silt at the bottom of a pond: Half just have worldviews which lead them to disagree with what you consider rationality even though they arrive at their positions through rational means, and the other half are the core of the Crazification either genuinely crazy; or so woefully misinformed about how the world works, the bases for their decision making is so flawed they may as well be crazy.

(9,214 posts)I mean even Republicans like a good laugh now and then, don't they? Oh, I know, they want to keep him around for the debates to make the real candidates look saner and with the exception of Perry, Santorum, and... well most of them, make them look smarter too.

(20,138 posts)He will never win the general, but he's got enough money to bankroll his primary campaign on his own without having to spend time fundraising. And he appeals to the nut job GOP base.

(14,591 posts)Libertarians in the state, and they are numerous, are attempting to throw a monkey wrench into the 2016 race by registering themselves as Republicans and voicing support for the latest fringe candidate.
They want to throw the state GOP into a frenzy and it's working. They were able to get state Republicans to call for the resignation of Frank Guinta.
