Cops warn of arrests at Church of Cannabis

Law enforcement officials said Friday that anyone attending the inaugural First Church of Cannabis service next week is subject to criminal charges, but the church's founder and "Grand Poobah" said the event will go on as planned Wednesday.
Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said during a press conference Friday morning that even those who attend, but do not partake in the church's sacrament, could be charged with visiting a common nuisance. The charge is a generally a misdemeanor.
Curry and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Rick Hite revealed law enforcement plans for reacting to the widely publicized service in what they described as an effort to dissuade church founder Bill Levin and his followers from going through with plans to smoke marijuana at the church.
... Levin contends the use of marijuana in the church service is protected by Indiana's controversial new Religious Freedom Restoration Act. He said Friday's announcement "changes nothing" about his plans for the service at noon Wednesday inside the small church at 3400 S. Rural St.
