Texas Pastor Now Says He Didn't Mean He'd Really Set Himself Aflame

Source: The Advocate

He threatened to become a human torch if the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. Now Pastor Rick Scarborough is clarifying his remarks.

BY DAWN ENNIS JUNE 27 2015 10:14 AM ET UPDATED: JUNE 27 2015 10:27 AM ET

Put away the marshmallows.

Texas Pastor Rick Scarborough issued a statement clarifying his statement that he would be willing to set himself on fire in his fight against gay rights, now declaring, "We do not support any violence or physical harm.” .

The antigay clergyman from Pearland, Tx., made the remark to right-wing preacher E.W. Jackson in a recorded conference call with supporters on June 16:

“We are not going to bow, we are not going to bend, and if necessary we will burn.”

Although it was not clear at the time whether Scarborough meant those words to be taken literally or figuratively, the fiery pastor issued a statement to KFYO News several hours after the high court issued its ruling Friday morning, walking back his remarks to clarify he was not planning a self-immolation.

I guess the key to fertility in that family is to get engaged and once knocked up, call off the wedding.

I go to, and then raised the question of how could she get on welfare? She's been paid $250K per annum to run around the country telling teens, "abstain, abstain, abstain" and she owns her own home in a wealthy suburb of Phoenix. As far as we know, she has not yet been fired from her "abstinence only" gig.

anti-gay rhetoric.

Republican presidential candidate and former pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson said Friday in a statement that he “strongly” disagreed with the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage but acknowledged that it was “now the law of the land.” Carson’s comments came after the Court ruled to legalize gay marriage across all 50 states.

“While I strongly disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision, their ruling is now the law of the land,” Carson said. Carson said the religious rights of Americans must not be affected by the ruling.

“I call on Congress to make sure deeply held religious views are respected and protected," he said. "The government must never force Christians to violate their religious beliefs.”

Carson also gave an opinion on marriage.

“I support same sex civil unions but to me, and millions like me, marriage is a religious service not a government form,” he said.

‘I have decided to join them’: Texas pastor who set self on fire 'haunted' by lynchings, hoped suicide would inspire justice

Charles Moore died June 23 after he set himself on fire in a Texas strip mall parking lot. His newly released suicide note revealed he was 'haunted' by racism, specifically how African-Americans were lynched in Texas. "I have decided to join them by giving my body to be burned," he wrote.

Sun Jun 28, 2015, 01:26 AM

fire--and he died from his burns.

But that minister was offering himself as a sacrifice, in hopes of moving the country's conscience to overcome racism and the injustice of using the legal system as a way of marginalizing and oppressing black Americans. Following the example of the martyred monks who immolated themselves in Vietnam, he was willing to die horribly in the cause of justice.

I bet this anti-marriage equality jerk was referring to the other minister's act of protest when he said he would set himself on fire to protest the ruling.

ON EDIT: A link to the article about the minister who set himself on fire last year:
