KKK began national recruiting efforts, including in Alabama, days after South Carolina massacre
Source: AL.com
Just days after nine people were killed inside a black church in South Carolina, residents across Alabama walked out of their homes on a Sunday morning to find KKK flyers packaged with pieces of candy in their driveways.
The leader of the Pelham-N.C.-based Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan told The Daily Beast that the group's national recruitment drive coincidentally launched about the same time as the massacre at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C.
Residents in Lake View, Bessemer and Tuscaloosa reported finding KKK flyers on June 21. Many of these flyers called for violence against gay people.
"It is very offensive," Bessemer Deputy Police Chief Mike Roper told AL.com, of the flyers. "You got law abiding people having to wake up on a Sunday morning to a mess like this. It is kind of upsetting. In this day and time, it is kind of upsetting."
According to reports, flyers were also distributed in Georgia, Mississippi, Kansas and California.
