CarePoint, union reach tentative contract agreement

A tentative contract agreement was reached tonight between CarePoint Health hospitals in Bayonne and Jersey City and the union representing 1,250 nurses and healthcare workers.
The agreement between the hospitals and the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union was reached more than 12 hours after the previous contract had expired this morning and after two months of sometimes difficult negotiations.
On Monday, HPAE members picketed both Bayonne Medical Center and Christ Hospital, calling for a fair contract before the current contract was due to expire this morning.
According to the union, the proposed 3-year agreement includes improvements in nurse staffing levels; wage increases; limits on increases in health insurance costs; and protections from additional contracting out of nursing staff.
