TV Land Pulls 'Dukes of Hazzard' Reruns
Source: ABC
The debate over the Confederate flag continues to spread to the entertainment world.
A week after Warner Bros. announced it would no longer sanction the manufacturing of "Dukes of Hazzard" merchandise featuring the flag, TV Land announced it's pulling reruns of the 1980s TV series featuring John Schneider and Tom Wopat as Bo and Luke Duke in fictional Hazzard County, Georgia.
In a statement to ABC News, the network confirmed Wednesday that the show had been "removed" from its schedule, while declining to comment further.
Reruns can still be found on CMT and online.

TV Land shows way too many ads/only the syndicated cuts (and doesn't even show the proper closing credits sequences anymore). That channel has got to shut down, since its shows are all on DVD anyway.

(32,077 posts)This "slippery slope of being offended" argument is the crap I came to DU to escape, not embrace.
Have any actual Middle Eastern groups (like the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee) actually complained about Jeannie, or is that a satirical situation in your mind?

Sample paragraph:
There are quite a few stereotypes presented in the movie about Arabs. The first stereotype the viewer is introduced to is the phony salesman, the bootlegger. He sells worthless objects, finding dozens of uses for the object just to convince the view to buy it so that he can make money. Everything he sells is fake or useless; he is out to rip people off. Jafar and Kazim exemplify a charlatan and a thief. Kazim admits to being a thief when requesting entry into the Cave of Wonders, where he denied access because he is untrustworthy like Jafar. Jafar plays the conniving charlatan, only seeking to satisfy his desires at the cost of the life of others.
http://mediatheoriesandeffects.blogspot.com/p/disney-stereotypes-arabs-in-disneys.html
Jafar turns into a snake to reveal his true personality
The guardsman almost always have their swords drawn
Jafar is perceived as manipulative throughout the whole movie
Many scenes of woman clad in belly dancer outfits
The heroes, Aladdin and Jasmine are Americanized with lighter skin color and American accents
That being said, Archae, I agree with you.

Bet Nazi's are not liking "Hogan's Heroes" much, there is a bit of a difference.

(37,748 posts)As for Hogan's Heroes, I don't think it's been pulled. No doubt though, some half-wit will attempt to find a moral consistency in companies rather than realizing companies react to market forces rather than ethics.

Same with racially offensive cartoons from the thirties and forties that the under-educated believes should be shown on network television in prime-time...

(35,390 posts)We'd pretty much just shut down tv.
Perhaps there'd be enough programming for a couple of channels. But otherwise it would be like Eugene when I first moved there: We had three networks on two channels, and sometimes could pick up PBS from Corvallis. Yes, two networks shared one tv channel. Some nights you'd get one, some nights the other. And that was plenty.

(95,337 posts)First, it's not a modern TV show but an ancient rerun that I highly doubt anyone watches today. But the last original DoH show was over 30 years ago and not really sure who is actually watching these reruns today nor do I care. I know I watched the original because I thought Luke Duke was cute. If we start pulling TV shows out there that are offensive the only thing left would be static. I guess that is why I got rid of cable ages ago.
I think they made one very lame attempt at a modern movie but Jessica Simpson, Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott are no match for the original Dukes. I did see parts of the movie and have to question how much dope Willie Nelson was smoking to do that movie, he was actually the only decent part in it but it was still a really bad movie that did well at the Razzie awards that year.

As for the "Dukes of Hazzard," never watched it. It's TV Land's business decision, as far as I'm concerned. If people want it, they can find it elsewhere.
ON EDIT: I'd like to add that Ben Jones ("Cooter" has been a loud defender of the Confederate flag on news shows lately...also was in the House from Georgia.

Personally I'd like to see reality TV go away. The real housewives are idiotic and offend me. But I don't watch it. I tried to watch, because my wife likes it. I got 10 minutes in and had to shut it off.

(533 posts)I am against the treason, white supremacist, American swastika hanging on statehouses and government building, and I look down on citizens who display it, but come on. . .
Here my reasons we should over look it. Yes the flags on the car. Yes it is offensive but,
1.) The shows a parody. It makes fun of our distorted vision of what the South is.
2.) I doubt the producers knew what that flag meant, and were from California--(which is one of the reasons I roll my eyes when coastal residence get so judgmental at "the fly over." Yeah because Hollywood was never racist, homophobic, misogynic, ect...)
3.) Some of the AA guest stars were in strong rolls of characters more intelligent than the county folk--a rarity at that time when blacks were often put into stock rolls. (As I recall it)
Quick sidebar on how I got the best of a wingnut on Facebook. She had posted a meme with the Dukes and the General Lee and it said " you didn't mind the flag when it was on the Dukes Of Hazards." I commented that I was 6 and, " well next time you are jailed by a corrupt county commissioner and incompetent sheriff I will say ' well you didn't mind when it was on the Dukes of Hazard."
It's fiction.
To add a bit to what you stated, people should remember how incompetent the show made the local police department to be. That is one of the reasons it is a parody. I watched the show when I was younger and thought it was hilarious because it was about two guys who like to essentially mess with the local police and stop whatever corrupt shit they were up to.
"Fighting the system like a two modern day Robin Hood..."
I hope they do eventually start airing the shows again.

(30,783 posts)a mindless bit of over-the-top parody. My husband and I used to watch it, and wonder why we got such a kick out of it. We knew it was stupid.
Let's not get carried away with our righteousness.
Sometimes I watch old tv shows and wonder why all the women were airheads. When are we going to get rid of all the fifties and sixties shows that portray all the women, even the professional and educated women, as mindless bits of fluff? Maybe we can learn something while watching these period pieces. Or, maybe we can just be entertained by a bit of nostalgia.
TheOther95Percent
(1,035 posts)Ben Johnson has been very vocal about his support for the Confederate flag; going on an ALLCAPS Facebook rant and penned an opinion piece for the New York Times that appeared only a couple of days after the Charleston murders. Read the Times piece. It's a bit tone deaf especially in light of what happened two days earlier. His FB rant takes it to a whole 'nother level.
Timing is everything. I suspect it's what I'm calling the Rush Limbaugh Effect. For years, it seemed like Rush couldn't say anything that was too over the top for advertisers. Then his comments on Sandra Fluke reached a wider audience and companies didn't want to be associated with his brand. Trump is the latest idiot to get some serious blow back for his comments. I believe Limbaugh and Trump have made advertisers more sensitive to the prospect that there are people out there saying negative things about women or people of color. Now, when someone says something mildly controversial, the advertisers start running for the exits because they don't want to wait for you to say something really offensive.
