GOP candidate Trump goes after Sen. John McCain's war record

Source: AP

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump criticized Arizona Sen. John McCain's military record Saturday, saying he was a "war hero because he was captured."

Speaking at a conference of religious conservatives in Iowa, Trump was pressed on his recent description of the 2008 Republican presidential nominee as "a dummy."

McCain served as a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War. He was captured after his plane was shot down and was held more than five years as a prisoner of war. The moderator, Republican pollster Frank Luntz, described McCain as "a war hero."

Trump said McCain "is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured." The comment drew some boos from the audience.

This is one of the hardest things to watch, so I will understand if people are uninterested in seeing it:

It is obvious that McCain endured torture and ill-treatment while a POW. I wish he would have taken something other than what he did away from that experience, but I am not going to cast any aspersions on his military combat service.

I'm not above making jokes about how he was almost the anchorman at the academy, or even doing the snark about how he wrecked three planes, or even commenting about his time on the Hill at OLA (he was a bit of a ... errrr ... ladies' man), but when it comes down to brass tacks, I'm not going to question his commitment to the Navy or the quality of his operational service. He did more than most. He endured torture at the hands of the enemy and he didn't take the easy way out. He displayed character under duress. Did I ever think all that qualified him for the Presidency? Hell no! But I don't need to disparage his service to say I don't think he'd ever be a good Prez.

Why The Donald needs to go there is beyond me. Does he want to Deliberately Implode, I wonder?

2) Speaking the truth, which is why he's catching shit from the rest of the sane world (which is "out of step" with Trump and his base).
3) Not afraid to tell it like it is.

Ignorance and bombast seem to be prized values anymore. For many years I've been afraid of someone like a Donald Trump gaining traction on a national scale -- I hope this isn't it and that his comments today mark the beginning of the end of his prominence in national politics.

Takes a monumental pair of balls to discredit McCain's service, especially coming from someone who hasn't done one damn thing of significance in his own life except to erect ugly, money-losing monstrosities and naming them after himself.

I don't know how conservatives, much less the GOP, can continue to defend or ignore this assclown. Veterans in particular should be outraged.

And all because McCain called out Trump for his bigot rally in Arizona.

Trump's mouth overshoots his ass on a daily basis anymore. I don't find it funny, I find it frightening, especially since he's gaining in the polls. I hope that today he just imploded his campaign.

I take exception to Mr. Trump's attack on Senator McCain based on his having been a war hero. Yes he was captured. No, that would not have been anything like a vacation in Tahiti, or wherever it is the Donald goes to get away from it all.

Regardless of whether the US had honorable or wise aims in Vietnam, McCain, while serving his country, took a risk of being shot and was, in fact, shot down. It happens often to even the best pilots. Sometimes a pilot is shot down and not taken prisoner for the simple reason that he doesn't survive the crash. It was not McCain's first mission. It was his 23rd.

Obviously, a business risk takes less courage than that, but Mr. Trump, who is alleged to be a savvy real estate tycoon, should appreciate the value taking risks and I'm sure he knows that taking any risk, by definition, means that things might not work out as well as one would have liked.

and you ought to retract. You probably won't, and people will judge you for that. As they should.

Although McCain was badly wounded, his captors refused to treat his injuries, beating and interrogating him to get information; he was given medical care only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was a top admiral.[37] His status as a prisoner of war (POW) made the front pages of major newspapers.[38][39]
McCain spent six weeks in the hospital while receiving marginal care.[34] By then having lost 50 pounds (23 kg), in a chest cast, and with his hair turned white,[34] McCain was sent to a different camp on the outskirts of Hanoi[40] in December 1967, into a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live a week.[41] In March 1968, McCain was put into solitary confinement, where he would remain for two years.[42]

He should have just pointed out McCain's stupidity in his thinking Sarah Palin was qualified to be VP.

Pretending every soldier is a hero is also stupid. Vietnam, Iraq, and even Afghanistan were very stupid wars. No basis to attack any of them. One might argue Afghanistan because of 911 but, the fact is that the Taliban offered to turn over Bin Ladin to third party, such as The Hague if Bush would provide them with some evidence, incriminating him. In other words it was a police matter.

Political correctness is also stupid. Nationalism and Militarism is gutting out this nation. Sixty cents out of a dollar in tax revenues go to the Military. The US Military also has the worst carbon foot print. So in time they will have largely contributed to the destabilization of the nation, when mass migration takes past due to GLOBAL WARMING.

You reap what you sow. Bush and his kind enabled Trump. It's because Bush and his "respectable" predecessors (including Bush Sr.) allowed these kinds of people a voice in their party -- never called them out, allowed their insanity to fester -- that they're forced to disavow them now, forced to pretend that this isn't what their party has come to.

I'm disappointed that Trump may have killed his candidacy, and delayed the day of reckoning, by talking crap about McCain.
