Arrest Made In Fatal Shooting Of Hayward Police Sergeant

HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- Hayward police say they've arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of Sgt. Scott Lunger during a traffic stop early this morning. At a news conference held at the Hayward Police Department Wednesday afternoon, Chief Diane Urban said they arrested Mark Anthony Estrada. She said he turned 21 just four days ago on July 18. Estrada being treated for gunshot wounds at Highland Hospital in Oakland and is under guard in police custody.
The incident began around 3 a.m. in the area of Lion and Myrtle streets in Hayward. Police say Lunger and another officer stopped a driver who was "driving erratically."
Witness John Super says the shots came in rapid succession.
"I heard the shots for sure," he said. "The shots were so rapid fire it was war-like. Almost, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam."
